Assignment 2.2 – Values
According to ( Schwartz et al., 2007 ) asserts in the article concerning the ethnically diverse sample that was collected from 349 emerging-adult university students. The article tends to study the measures of orientation in relation to
American and heritage cultural practices. The various ethnicity in the US tends to have varied values. In this retrospect, the whites Americans have a strong belief and relations to the American heritage. African Americans or black Americans relates more with the acculturation strategies into American culture. The fact is that there is higher openness to experiences since different cultured people tend to transfer their values and beliefs to another. Some of the acculturation methods include integration, assimilation, separation, and also marginalization. The American acculturation is vast as there are many new emerging cultures. On a personal perspective, I conform that openness to experiences has more cultural benefits like diversity. The various ethnicities in the US have fused through marriages and relationship.
The concept of openness to experiences give people in society the chance to be intellectually curious about other cultural beliefs. It is important to accept other people and conform to the element of collectivism.
Additionally, in masters of openness to experience, the dimension of individualism and collectivism is highly evident in different cultures. In African Americans and Hispanic ethnicities tend to prefer familial, which is characterized to collectivism. Family and community achievement and progress tend to have more social cohesion in this race.
When one is open to other cultural values, then they tend to be aesthetic sensitive. It is imperative to understand that mindfulness is essential in soceity. Individualism is more related and correlated to independence-interdependence aspect in that in the American culture; people prefer self-reliant, and achievement. In the article, the authors contend that ethnic identity is essential to promote values systems. Familism among Hispanic society tends to promote the idea of “openness to experience” ( Christensen, 2020).
However, Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics usually varied ethnic differences which means they have different cultural settings which bring to three central
cultural identities in the US. There are factors that impact familial and ethnic socialization in that different cultures people interact differently. But whenever people are open to experience, then the success of acculturative strategies are much easier. It is essential yo understand when there is cultural rigidity then it leads to stress, and perceived ethnic discrimination among ethnic groups. Black Americans have been racialized and discriminated against mainly because of their African origin, which is a pure cultural setting compared to mixed ethnicities. The lack of respect for other cultures makes the other low-
ethnic minority individuals feel unhappy and insecure.
Openness helps individuals to have that tendency of being informed about other people, being more creative, and insightful.
This element means that cultural sensitivity is achieved in a society. Openness in culture entails one being curious about foods, fashion and many aspects of other cultures, for example, trying Asian cuisine and appreciating African prints and clothing. It is essential to have a variety of experience so that one can appreciate other people.
The dimension of conscientiousness requires cultures to have a tendency to show an aspect of self-discipline. More importantly, extraversion would be beneficial to increases positivity in energy and emotions. When people from different cultures are sociable, then it promotes good ethical relations. Agreeableness is one of the personality variations enables people to be tolerant and compassionate to other cultures. Respecting the values involves trusting different ethnicities by reducing cultural and implicit bias. Neuroticism usually is related to racism and discrimination as it is associated with anger and ethnicity vulnerability.
Conclusively, there is reason to have openness to experiences so that it can enhance good relation of cultural identity to elements like familial ethnic
Socialization. It is important for ethnic minorities to avoid acculturative stress when they are not accepted in a particular culture. The fact that there is always racial tension and perceived
ethnic discrimination, people have to accept other culture by being openminded.
