Assignment 3: Experience Report
Note: If you are at a cultural event it would be a good opportunity to ask the questions from Experience Report 2. It can be found in Module 6.
Value: 10%
Module 2 describes the history and culture of Aboriginal peoples. It is, of course, a generalization, as there is considerable variation between tribal groups. The intent of this assignment is to bring the reality of a First Nation’s cultural practice home to the student. Instructions for this assignment are as follows:
- You are required to attend a First Nations Cultural Event/Experience.
Examples are:
- a sweat lodge
- a powwow
- a potlatch
- a bundle ceremony
- a museum, etc.
- Complete a paper on the experience, describing the following details:
- the event/experience itself – time, place, who attended, etc.
- the history and meaning of the experience in the lives of First Nations people
- your own impressions and feelings
The paper should reflect knowledge of the event and a keen observer’s eye about what happened.
HINT: Review the background to the event before you go; you will get much more out of it.
Length: Minimum of 500 words
Use the “Guidelines for Formal Essays and Papers” found in the Read Me First section of this course.
Note: Students unable to complete course assignments and exams within the outlined due dates must communicate and converse with the instructor and make alternate arrangements. Assignments and exams will not be accepted past the due date without prior approval of the instructor
