Assignment 6: Modern Slavery
Modern slavery is institutional slavery that up-to-date still occurs (Davidson, pp i-x). Indeed, modern slavery today has many victims, approximately millions depending on the form of slavery. Today, millions of people are in forced labor, the majority of them being exploited jobs, forced sex, and forced marriage. Arguably, poor societal structure, inadequate education systems, and lack of the rule of law are significant causes of modern slavery.
The significant difference between modern slavery and older slavery is that ancient slavery cost much to get slaves. On the contrary, modern slaves are easily obtained due to lower prices. For instance, today, a slave can be bought for 90 dollars. In the past, when a slave was acquired for 40,000 US. Dollars. Maintaining slaves in the past slavery was a key area of concern due to low replacement chances. I think slaves today are easily replaced, as they are many in numbers. Due to its profitability, modern slavery, some corrupt governments give room for it. I think modern slavery is worse than the older slavery as the definition of slavery today is not clear, and thus a high possibility of victimization without recognition.
