Most colleges have strict class attendance requirements by the students. The strict standards require students to attend a set majority of classes to quality to sit for examinations without exemptions. The requirement reflected as a standard of enhancing adherence to academic standards. Though there are set conditions on how to meet course requirements at the college level through strict student attendance requirements, there are other more effective ways of meeting the contact hours and course content requirements for college students without strict attendance standards.

As a tradition, colleges require students to attend studies. The strict attendance reis often enforced through a manual or a digital login platform. The percentile of one’s attendance is a basic requirement needed for one to qualify to sit for the final examinations. However, it is necessary to relax some of the strict student attendance requirements in the modern era. The argument of increasing the contact hours is used as a way of justifying strict attendance of classes and learning engagements in college. Contact hours are defined as the times when the students engage with the lecturer in learning hours (Mancini). The context, however, is limited in approach. It is an assumption that physical presence is a guarantee that the students are engaged in the learning process. Missing classes, for instance, is construed as an indication of engaging in the learning process.

Further, the arguments in favor of a strict learning schedule are based on a presumption that learning mainly takes place within the lecture rooms in colleges. In the modern technology-driven era, however, learning has been diversified. It is possible to learn online and to access materials with ease from numerous online platforms. Relaxing the strict class attendance requirements in college provides the students with the impetus to engage in a progressive and holistic research approaches. It means that they can learn vastly more than the limited content that is taught in classes (Huang and Li Jiang). Thus, it is evident that relaxing the class attendance requirements can enhance diversity in ideology and progressive learning that is not limited to the content that is taught in the lectures.

Additionally, the strict learning requirements are indicated by the need to meet the core curricula requirements for one to qualify to sit for the final examinations. The context is highlighted in the need to engage lecturers through the attendance of the classes (Paras). The program has been vindicated by studies in various colleges. It is an approach that seeks to stick with the proven approaches in learning.

Further, the examinations in colleges are progressive. The colleges have the mandate of setting their examinations, which is a reflection of academic autonomy. Relaxing the class attendance requirement ought not to be reflected in a way that lowers the academic performance of the students (Ortiga). The colleges can use their academic autonomy to vary the length that a student needs to study to qualify for the final examination. Such flexibility can go a long way in allowing the students the freedom to engage in other emerging economic activities.
