Bad leadership
Bad leadership refers to the inability of a leader to act as an icon to the subordinate, thus exhibiting negative characteristics such as lack of commitment, being self-centered, insensitivity to the feelings of others, inability to hold communicate effectively, being selfish as being rigid. Bad leadership may appear in different spheres of our lives, such as in the work environment, homes, schools, churches, and the government. The existence of lousy leadership results in adverse effects like; lack of unity of action among the employees, lack of employee motivation, lack of efficiency in operations, mismanagement of funds, and other resources by the employee. In the health care setting, it is even worse since poor leadership endangers the lives of patients.
Among the significant issues identified is the tendency of being absent from the chief pulmonologist. This can be attributed to a lack of accountability on the part of the organization as the management failed to notice this promptly. The chief absenteeism resulted in working strain on other members of staff who were forced to be attending to his patients. Another problem identified is the unfortunate practice of medicine by the chief pulmonologist. This problem is a result of the lack of commitment of the chief as characteristics of laziness were also noted. Poor practice continually puts the patients at risk hence risking the reputation of the organization.
Addressing bad leadership is essential in improving the quality of services provided in health care. To bring the problem to an end, it is advisable to address any underlying reasons why a specific person seems to be performing poorly. Also, it is good to assess the tasks given to a leader. This is because, sometimes, the work assigned may surpass the work experience and capabilities of the leader. Another way of rectifying the problem of bad leadership is through creating situational leadership. This is if poor leadership is a result of a lack of confidence, guidance is provided. Lastly, continuously subjecting leaders to training programs will enable them to improve their leadership skills.
The best way to correct lousy leadership is by identifying the underlying problem that may have resulted in poor leadership. This will aid in formulating subsequent actions that should be taken.
Reporting my superior will be done on the escalation of the cases and effects of the provision of unsafe care to the clients. If mistakes are minimal, I will politely correct my superior.
Reporting my superior as a student may sometimes feel unsafe. Having a little experience, I run the risk of being seen as nosy or a ‘know-it-all.’
As a professional nurse reporting the physician, I will feel safe since, based on my experience of taking care of patients, being able to confidently point out what has been done right and what has been done wrong.
I can keep quiet on seeing my superior providing unsafe care when I am not very sure of what should be done. However, after the session, I will make a follow-up, find out what is right to be done then politely correct my superior.
I have experienced an instance of bad leadership in my local church. Where the leader of the youth group formed lacked the ability to bring the youths together in that at the end of the day, a lot of members withdrawing from the group, he also misappropriated the funds contributed by the youth for a church project.
