Abstract

This paper discusses why it is essential for a teacher to do a course on special needs education. It will include the different types of special needs education offered. It will also include the advantages of special needs education to the teachers, the success, achievements, and future contributions to the community. In some countries, children who have special educational needs are given services and accommodation which help them perform to their best and reach their academic penitential.

Introduction

Special needs are conditions or factors that hinder an individual’s healthy learning and development. The special needs children are children with medical, physical, cognitive, emotional, or learning issues require different accommodation from school and learning environment. The individual needs education was design for learning strategies for people with disabilities. The students who need special needs education include the vision-impaired or the blind, the hearing impaired, or the deaf.                                                                                                             Students with learning disabilities, students with physical disabilities, students with a behavior disorder, and those who have speech difficulties. So, all the teachers should learn and develop practical and useful special educational skills to ensure that all students including those with special educational needs learn effectively

Advantages

Teachers, through this course of special needs education, can educate peers. In that, they can educate other people about disabilities, which will make them have social opportunities that won’t make them have a harder time socializing and interacting with other students.

An educated teacher can supervise the individual students, and this helps them work with other students. It also helps them plan for lessons and discovers that works for the variety of the kids in the classroom and ways to discipline for maximum instruction and success.

Individual education teachers are also taught on how to differentiate instruction to help all types of learners succeed. Special needs education helps the students become competent in their teaching and understanding of the students’ needs and help those who will be at risk.

This education will help a teacher educate the parents on how they should handle their children and advise them to bring their special children in school to be educated. Parents should not be stigmatized. They should bring their children to school to become more aware of the causes and the prevention of disabilities.

It will be easy for teachers to understand the learning difficulties and the children’s problems and be able to deal with them differently and have the insight that will help the peculiar children from being at risk of disabilities. The teachers who have done this course will help them to appreciate the importance of particular children’s differences, in that they will be able to know that the learners develop differently and that they are not on the same side to learn the same things at the same time.

Teachers are also exposed to the scientific cause of disabilities through the knowledge that they gain. In that, they will not be able to do some complexities like hitting ahead of a pupil that may lead to some disabilities. Teachers can understand that some children have got the vision. Still, the problem is that they cannot read a word because of the blindness and others have some difficulties in some subjects because of inheritance from their parents and not because of some laziness.

Teachers are required to study special needs which will help them to know the capabilities, the needs of individual children, with this special needs education many students will be accepted in schools and the teachers in another side will also be able to understand their disabilities since it cannot spread to other students and affect them.

Effects on success and achievements

In some institutions, students were identified as disabled by their school, where individual needs are cared for.

A higher percentage of learners were labeled as disabled by the school system since the subject was receiving a variety of special education services.

Among the school labeled learning disabled, those students receiving either a combination of both gifted and learning disability services report higher self-concepts than those students receiving intensive learning disability service.

There might be some different effects of the inclusion of students with special on regular education students with different abilities. For example, special needs education is likely to need more attention; teachers might expect more independency from those that are not special needs education students. This is seen that it can harm the achievement of students who are achievement low, while those who are high achieving students benefit but driving the average effects to zero.

 

Challenges that affect the special needs education

Research done was that teachers accepted the notion but resisted the student had some significant problems, including behavioral disorder and emotional disorder. A study by Goodley (2007) indicated that the effects of emotional and behavioral disorder in a classroom contributed to the resignation of many teachers in many schools. This is due to many responsibilities that they tend to face; hence they give up on it.

Some studies in some countries were seen in that the teachers welcomed the students with medical and physical disabilities. Still, they resisted the individual need students who had more significant disabilities. There was some of the teacher’s attitude favorable.

Most teachers argued that most policymakers were not in touch with the realities of the classroom. In that, the pull-out model was seen favored by many teachers who supported the special needs education department that was responsible for students with disabilities(Berryman,2009), and few teachers believed that it was their responsibility to modify the curriculum for learners with special needs.

The teachers who were not committed in there work as a teacher could find it difficult and see particular education need as more demanding and have the tendency of even neglecting their academic matter (Khrais, 2005).

When the learners get neglected, they isolate themselves and create low social esteem since they appear to be stressed out.

Many teachers are seen struggling with accommodating the unique needs of some students and disadvantaging other students.

Some teachers also believed that making accommodations was unfair to other students.

Conclusion

It can be concluded from the challenges that face the teachers that, teachers lack the necessary skills and knowledge to implement the inclusion of learners with special needs. There is also the lack of essential facilities that aid the learning of special needs education pupils such as hearing aids.

Learners with disabilities also face some challenges in learning in that some communities discriminated against them, and others considered disabilities a curse. Others would even give birth to children with disabilities and throw them in the bush.

Having a well-trained teacher is imperial for students’ success since the students with learning disabilities have different learning abilities. The participants’ views in this research have significantly contributed to an understanding and appreciation of the obstacles to an understanding and appreciation of the obstacles to and the potential for the development of a responsive educational system that recognizes and promotes the full participation of children with disabilities.
