Does the massive use of Big Brother surveillance technologies make you feel safer because it can protect you from crime, or less safe because of possible violations of your civil liberties?
The Big Brothers surveillance innovations make me feel safer because they enable the government to trace the perpetrators of crimes and face the law. If such technology were not present, the cases of lawlessness in different countries would be prevalent than it is today. This technology lowers the cases of crimes and reduces the chances of committing crimes while mitigating others. The surveillance system offers a sense of security for both individuals and businesses. It is likewise associated with a peace of mind. These technologies allow people to move around the cities without worrying about the possible occurrence of crimes. Besides, this technology can reduce the cases of harassment and crimes because cameras easily capture the evidence. When I see surveillance cameras, I usually think they are there to catch crimes in action. Since this is their purpose, they likewise help deter crimes from happening in the first place, which promotes a sense of security. Job 11:18 that “And you will feel secure, because there is hope; you will look around and take your rest in security.” This shows the importance of then feeling of security in the society. The surveillance technologies provide hope and a sense of security to the citizens, which gives some peace and relaxation. God is the provider of security. Nevertheless, there is a need to establish some measures to protect ourselves. God has given us knowledge and wisdom on how to protect ourselves from all forms of evil. This way, surveillance technologies are part of God’s plan to help humanity thrive in this hostile world.

Now that I understand the dangers that come with the wrong use of communication technologies, I will be more careful. I understand that whether there are surveillance technologies or not, every person is expected to act ethically and responsibly in order to avoid harming others in society. Further, I believe in both natural and human laws that promote ethics in the community, and this means I will act towards keeping these laws even when no one is watching. Romans 6:23 ascertains that “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” We have a moral duty to do what is right, whether someone is watching or not. I have not been conscientious about what I say on social media because I thought no one care about what people share through social networks. Since I understand the repercussions that could come with such behaviors, I will act accordingly and share what is only beneficial rather than destructive. Also, I will be mindful of my language in social networks to avoid hurting others. I understand that everything we do can be used against us by the government. To avoid such a scenario, I will act accordingly to obey the basic guidelines and policies established on the use of social networks. To avoid being judged, I will make sure that everything I say or share electronically does not violate the ethical and policy guidelines associated with electronic communication.
