Biomedical Engineering
I chose Biomedical Engineering as my career path since it entails the application of engineering practices in medicine. Biomedical engineering is a STEM-related field whose demand is continuously increasing in the job market. I chose this career path due to the interest that I have in engineering. Since I was a child, I was fascinated by different machines and how they work. This curiosity developed rapidly and was more interested when I learned medicine also depends on the use of various machinery. Different types of devices are also assembled to help in medicine advancement as well as increase the quality of life.
Besides, I have an interest in this field since I already show good comprehension of high school subjects such as Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and computer programming. I understand that these subjects form the foundation of Biomedical Engineering. Also, it would be necessary for anyone wishing to study the course to have the high school knowledge of the above subjects. Therefore, I believe my current familiarity with the topics would be useful when studying Biomedical Engineering. I am also eager to learn more concepts on the above subjects in the progress of the course.
Furthermore, I chose this field of practice due to my interest in medical practice and research. The health industry is a critical sector that ensures the well-being of every individual in society. Therefore, the introduction of modern life-saving concepts depends on the application of engineering techniques in the health industry. For example, the use of artificial organs can help prolong someone’s life when they fail. Besides, the knowledge and skills in engineering help develop advanced prosthetics. Similarly, the kidney dialysis machine is a life-saving invention that supports patients suffering from kidney problems (Florida International University, 2020). Therefore, I believe that studying in the field of Biomedical Engineering would help in researching and inventing new technologies that would further the practice in medicine.
Moreover, the career path of Biomedical Engineering is lucrative since there are different specialized areas that one can opt for after completion of their bachelor’s degree. For example, medical imaging is a dedicated area that allows one to design and service equipment used to view the inside of the human body (Florida International University, 2020). Also, clinical engineering is essential since it allows one to help the medical personnel in a healthcare facility to use the different machines at their disposal. The specialization of orthopedic bioengineering also allows one to design instruments and devices to help patients suffering from bone fractures, ligaments, or joints. Hence, this STEM-related field will be necessary for my career since I will choose from a variety of specialization that I would want to apply in practice.
The demand for practice in healthcare also drove the choice of Biomedical Engineering for my future. The healthcare industry is a sector that will continuously require new inventions. For example, the process of medical imaging and diagnosis is continually changing and will require efficient and accurate methods (Florida International University, 2020). Consequently, the demand for biomedical engineers will also increase. Therefore, I chose the career path with the idea that there will always be a demand for specialists in the market. Moreover, the average salary for a Biomedical Engineer in the US is over $89,000. Thus, studying this course will ensure sustainability while I also work to invent ways of improving the healthcare sector.
