Body composition assessment
Body composition assessment is a method of analyzing the significant components of the body that is fats, muscles, and body water to determine the body type. The three major types of body types (somatotype) are endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph. Body composition assessment is done through anthropometric measures such as weight, height, skinfold, and body circumference measures. Other sophisticated measures include; dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry, Hydrostatic weighing, Biometrical Impedance Analysis, among others.
The determination of Mary’s was done using the skin fold caliper methods. The calipers, which are usually tong-like, were used to pinch the skin on the abdominal, back, calf, thigh, chest, and triceps. The method is essential since 50% of fats are stored under the skin. Measurements taken were subjected to the formulae; (0.1548xsum of the measures from all body parts) + 3.580 to give the percentage of the fat. The accuracy of the measurement is, however, compromised by errors such as parallax error hence not recording the right frequency.
The subject had a fat measurement of 16%; hence her somatotype is endomorph. As an endomorph, Mary should maintain a dietary intake of 30% of carbohydrates, 35% of proteins, and 35% of fat. Taking of fruits in small amounts and avoiding foods with a large number of sugars will also be essential. Mary should also reduce her current intake of calories by 200. This macronutrient split will be crucial; it will primarily reduce fat accumulation in the body of an endomorph since they do not burn calories quickly.
In conclusion, body assessment, which can be done through various methods, is essential for healthy living. Knowing your body type is very significant in planning your diet, exercise as well as personal care routine. If you are in the somatotype that you do not desire, all is not lost since this can be rectified.
