Business Expansion

Folkways are customs or beliefs that are common to a particular society’s members. On the other hand, mores are a set of ethical customs, which are derived from commonly accepted or acknowledged practices. One of the mores that ought to be considered is relationships since Australians highly value relationships and loyalty. Australia is not highly populated, thus getting along with every individual is essential since the probability of crossing paths again is very high. Considering such practices could help attract more loyal customers. The city’s table manners should also be considered; for example, people in Sydney lay their knives and forks parallel on their plates. The handles face to the right. Also, people in Sydney are direct communicators and generally use a colorful language, unlike in various countries. Australians value punctuality when it comes to business meetings, and they prefer facts and even figures. In Sydney, being truthful and upfront can help one build excellent business connections faster. Dress code should also be considered since business attire is very conservative in Sydney.

Sydney is an individualistic society where individuals look after themselves plus their close families only. That affects one’s strategy in that in business, workers should be self-reliant and show initiative. Also, hiring decisions and promotions are founded on merit or even evidence of what an individual has accomplished or can achieve. An individualistic society can be disadvantageous since workers are discouraged from speaking up their opinions. Therefore, employees may avoid speaking up criticism to preserve or keep up the team’s harmony.

One of the cultural differences between the Australian and the Philippines society is the power distance. Australian society does not support inequality; thus, it easy for one to get a job. On the other hand, the Philippine community has a heightened power distance, thus allowing inequality. The Philippines compete for power and also wealth. Authority is highly respected in the Philippines, for instance, education status, unlike in Australia. The other cultural difference is that the Philippine is a collective society whereby individuals prioritize a society’s wellbeing over an individual’s welfare. On the other hand, Australia is an individualistic society. The cultural difference can bring about conflict in the company while incorporating the Australian’s individualistic culture in the labor force.
