Canada adopting the policy of basic income scheme
The author writes the report from a neutral point of view. The writer acknowledges that the idea of a basic income scheme has been around for some time theoretically. The author lists the advantages of Canada adopting the policy and balances them with the risks that come with adopting the policy. The author however tends to support the idea of a basic income scheme. The author assumes because the efforts of CERB have shown positive signs for a certain segment of people and during a time when the world is experiencing a pandemic, these results can be replicated to the whole population. The main focus during the pandemic is survival which is a human instinct. Food is a requirement for survival and hence spending of funds from CERB wisely is predominant. The author assumes that because of people’s desire for more, they will still go to work normally. This may work for workers who have high salaries and cannot depend on stipend. However, the author rightly states that this problem is likely to arise.
The author’s claims are extremely valid and convincing. The author outlines the dangers and possible benefits that could be reaped if Canada adopted a basic income scheme for all its citizens. According to the author, the benefits which could be reaped from the adoption of this policy include the elimination of complicated social welfare bureaucracies. Data collected previously and recently has vthat people receiving such kind of income in Canada tend to utilize the money properly. This has been demonstrated by the income citizens are receiving from the monthly stipend by CERB going mainly to the purchase of food items during the lockdown period. However for such a policy to be adopted, the author suggests the elimination of other strategies that have been put in place to help people in favor of this policy which reduces costs. However, adoption of the policy according to the author will likely bring laxity among the low-income workers. The income is likely to supplement the income that they earn. This promotes laziness and reduces the size of the workforce.
