Introduction

In the interactive case study, Natalie, a Russian immigrant, is a newly graduated nurse with a master’s degree in nursing.  Natalie has a Bachelor’s degree in engineering from back home, which indicates that her experience in nursing is only through nursing school. Natalie feels incompetent after she finishes her orientation at a local community hospital when she encounters Nurse Pam and Susan. They have a ten-year of experience in nursing and graduated with an associate degree in nursing.  Nurse Pam asks Natalie why she knows nothing about nursing, yet she has a master’s degree while Nurse Susan asks her what she learned through the university. The role theory, conflict theory, and social exchange theory are highlighted in Natalie’s case.

The role theory

The role theory defines how individual nurses behave in a social setting and the perception of their behavior by patients and colleagues. The theory further states that an individual can adjust by understanding how others feel, think, and respond to situations. In the case study, Natalie can adapt to her role behavior with colleagues and patients and therefore avoid conflict.  As suggested by her professor, Natalie should give herself time to adjust to the social setting.

Conflict theory

According to conflict theory, inequalities at work can result in conflicts.  Natalie feels conflicted with the two other nurses who make rude and hostile comments.   The two nurses may also feel conflicted with Natalie due to her higher levels of education.  I think Natalie can resolve the situation by speaking up directly to old nurses and letting them know it’s not acceptable to create a hostile environment. If she doesn’t feel comfortable conflicting them instantly, she should go up the chain of command.

Social exchange theory

The social exchange theory states that relationships are most successful when each party receives mutual benefits.  It seems like Natalie does not have a reciprocal relationship with the other nurses, which is evident from their hostile comments and the desire Natalie has to resign her job. The situation could be resolved if there, Natalie built a relationship with the nurses.

Personal experience

When I was a new graduate nurse, I received hostile treatment from older and more experienced nurses. I also witnessed a novice nurse resign after hostile treatment—praise and respect towards the older nurses aids in the conflicts. Overall, I believe that older and experienced nurses should welcome novice nurses and try to understand their perspective.
