Chapters 14 and 15 discussion
The technological revolution requires that everyone understands features like media that comes with it. Media literacy, for instance, enables the users to view the media content objectively, understand what one should do or not do with it, and analyze what has been presented. A media literate person is able to access, plan, analyze, make valuation, and create messages in respect to the contextual requirement (Frost 4). Lastly, media literacy skills also enhances critical thinking and self-expression. A society that is not media literate is prone to misinterpretation and misuse of the media. At the end, whatever they post in it might turn against them with immediate effect or in future. The areas that I find challenging in media literacy are privacy, fake identity, and miscommunication. On privacy, one is exposed to people who are not known to them and often use the fake identify in form of pseudo accounts. Lastly, miscommunication is challenging in media especially when users communicate in coded language.
As a future employee, I am not comfortable that employers will use our social media platforms to get to know us better. Basically, social media was created for socialization and making fun. Again, most profiles on the social media do not represent the person as he is in the real life (Frost 18). People often ensure that the profile or the content they post there conforms to expectation of the audiences. I don’t think that it would be ethical because the social media might contain confidential information like family pictures, place where one came from or has visited, relationship partners, and more. This might bring an aspect of misinterpretation and knowing too much information that is unnecessary for employment. Regardless of this opinion, some employers will still use the social media to know more about their employees. Social media users should thus ensure that whatever they post is ethical, must avoid negative making posts, reducing exposure of private life, and reducing to a following to groups that have unethical grounds.
