Child Marriage
Child marriage is defined as any marriage that happens below the age of 18 years. However, for girls, this marriage can happen even before the age of 10, at most 7 and 8 years (Wodon et al., 2017). There are various reasons that people give out their children in marriage, even at such an early age. In my opinion, child marriage is wrong in every way due to the various inconveniences and negativities it brings, especially to the girl child.
The first reason for arguing against child marriage is that there is a high chance that the child’s education would be cut short. Marriage would require that they assume adult responsibilities, which denies them time for school. Some of the girls may even sire children and therefore would have to choose between the children and their careers. It also increases the chances of domestic violence and reduces the economic benefits which she should have gotten through her education.
The second thing is that for a girl aged below 15 years, there is a times higher chance of death at childbirth compared to young adults (World Vision, 2020). They may suffer from the rapture of
bleeding, which puts their lives in danger. It also puts in danger the lives of the children to be born. There are high chances that most of the children born would be underweight and a 60% chance of death during their first year (International Women Health Coalition, 2020). The child cannot negotiate for safe sex such as prevention from HIV and sexually transmitted diseases.
Objection
Child marriage increases the population of a country. The community is one of the most significant factors in the economic growth of a nation. Girls tend to be more fertile during their early as that when they get old. Also, first marriage allows an individual to have as many children as possible. They also receive protection from manipulation, especially in hostile environments and situations where the parents cannot take care of them.
Conclusion
In conclusion, as uh as child marriage has its benefits, the negativities are stronger. Therefore it is the responsibility of every society to ensure that child marriage is forbidden. Law should be passed to prevent child marriage.
