Introduction
This paper aims to present an argument for the involvement of children in theatre in public schools in elementary school kids from a personal point of view. The article gives various reasons why children in elementary schools should be involved in drama and theatre and that the Board of Education should retain it despite budgetary constraints.
In my opinion, drama and theatre are helpful to young kids because it helps them to develop cognitive abilities that complement study in other disciplines. For example theatre and drama enables the children to approach situations in an array of different techniques which can help to develop creative thinking and new methods of studying. Also, through theatre communication between peers is enhanced as children are exposed to group activities. Another importance of theatre is that it helps the kids to identify their talents as early as possible. The kids also find their voice through theatre, they realize their potentials, they build self-confidence, and it can be of great benefit to introverted and reserved children.
I would also argue that theatre can act as an agent through which a variety of emotions can be learned and rehearsed in children. The arts provide a good outlet for children to explore an array of feelings such as delight, unhappiness, anger and joy. This helps the children to express a healthy release of emotions and feelings. The experiences in theatre by children helps them to learn their likes and dislikes, their abilities and their interests. The creative drama also allows students to learn about problem-solving and relating to one another and other people. They learn to balance their ideas, consider other’s perspectives, negotiate, develop a plan to act and delay gratification which becomes useful traits in future.
Additionally, I would point out that through theatre, children create skills and knowledge. Dramatic play is an ideal way for children to blend their skills and experience because it gives them the opportunity to do so. In a drama, they take the roles of a doctor, shopkeeper and customers in a supermarket scenario and through this they make sense of the world around them.
Furthermore, children cultivate social and emotional intelligence through theatre and drama. In the plays, the children are forced to think, to make correct choices and learn the consequences of making particular decisions. How do you think the great singers and artists we have today came to be?
