Introduction

Cinderella was a costume that is first seen in the 1950s in Disney’s animation film ‘Cinderella.’ It was a magical masterpiece that came to the imagination of many kids with the Baby blue gown worn by the fairy tale starring. Cinderella has been redesigned many times and was created initially for the suit in films. Julie Andrews in Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella in 1957, created two different types of dress for their starring at only one was worn since the other one was too big and bulky to use,( Dundes, 1988). Designer Ellen MIrojnick designed a Cinderella gown for Brandy’s, and she had the original blue and white colors to bring out the sparkle in 1997. Jenny Beavan tried to use her knowledge in Cinderella gowns and made a gown that is off the shoulder. Cinderella gowns have been interpreted and designed by many designers to be used in films. The original designer Sandy Powell, (Age, 2000, pg9)

Production Information

The costume was set and came from the inspirations in the 19th Century with some details from the 18th Century. It is created to be used in the film and comes out as an iconic masterpiece. In the movie, since there was a ball concert, the dress had to stand out from the others, and that is why it has a unique design from the waist downwards. The suit also had to be simple and had to look like a dress because Cinderella from the film was a simple fairy. The colors used on the costume are blue and white because the dress had to be visible and have a sparkle, (Taylor, 1953, pg 251-254)It also had to be bright since the ball was during the night and therefore one of the goals was to make it visible at night. The make of the dress makes it possible for the fairy to dance and escape to the dance at night. It had to accommodate both of these qualities into one.

Design intentions

Anybody who has had a closer look at Cinderella gown or costumes has the impression that it is made of a layer of fabric. It is not the case as Powell wanted to create a movement by creating a crinoline cage. In the top part of the costume were made a couple of petticoats with frills at the bottom that help to hide her as she dances and jumps. The outer top of the outfit is made of silk fabric, and the inner layers are polyester fabric. This is light fabrics and is meant to satisfy the intention of having a dance dress that would stand out from the rest of the dresses. The Cinderella costume was accompanied by glass silver shoes with butterfly decorations on them, but later on, the dress was redecorated a butterfly was added to the dress to make the costume look beautiful, (Dundes, 1988)

Design Accomplishments

The Cinderella gown is huge but also appears weightless due to the fabrics used to make it. The shoe to the costume was designed to appear like a shoe that people would like to wear, and yet it would be impossible for them to wear them unless you were Cinderella. The dress was to make Cinderella be seen and seek attention and actually get a chance to dance with the prince (Leavy, 1982, pg91-141). According to Sandy Powell, her main concern was the movement of the dress due to the dancing, the color and actually made the dress move with the body, which had also had to be light. In escaping too, it hard to look good and actually help in escaping to the ball ( Einhorn, 2002). The Cinderella gown has a Silhouette that is a unique thing as compared to their dresses, which was to help in the dancing, not have the legs restricted.

Cinderella gowns have taken the world with stun as they have become a great masterpiece to events today. Weddings have experienced a large number of brides wearing and rocking in the Cinderella gown and masterpiece. Being huge and light actually makes it very easy to have and were to events without the bulkiness of having it on you. Dances in events are also easy to perform since the dress is well suited for that (Preston 1994, pg 27-49). Production of the costume is still done today, although with minor changes and adjustments e.g., color and some people opting to have the dress sleeveless. The Cinderella gown portrays one as a fairy or as a princess, and it has costumes for kids and adults that are well similar in design.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Cinderella costume is a masterpiece that was well created and suits many as a costume still used today shows its classical nature and affiliations to the social class of royalty.
