Class Management

What is my definition of classroom management?

Class management is the process of ensuring classes are conducted smoothly. For teachers to teach students effectively, the class environment has to be conducive to learning. Teachers use various skills and strategies to make sure that there is order in class, and students are more attentive, focused, and industrious. Class management also refers to behavior management, where teachers must ensure to eliminate the behaviors that hamper learning and encourage those that improve learning. Teachers are responsible for students’ behavior, and failure to control bad behavior is a breach of duty (Garrett, 2014). Effective teachers are those that manage their classes effectively for the benefit of their students.

How do I want my classroom to look and feel, behaviorally speaking? What aspects of classroom functioning are most important to me?

Firstly, my class should be well organized physically. Desks should be well arranged in rows, making it easy for my students and me to move from one point of class to the other. My students should also be well organized and behaved. They should keep time and never come to class late unless they have a valid reason. My students should also be disciplined and respectful. They should not make noise in class, or get distracted during sessions but should be focused, attentive, and participatory. Issues of fighting or using insulting language cannot be tolerated. The most important aspects of classroom functioning include communication, discipline, and respect. Through communication, I will understand my students. I will also capture their attention (Garrett, 2014). It is only through discipline that my students can meet their obligations. Also, I would like my students to recognize me as their teacher and respect me as I will respect them as well.

What are my responsibilities in classroom management?

The responsibilities of a teacher include organizing, monitoring, and planning. As a teacher, my students rely on me to know what they should learn. Therefore, I ought to plan lessons as well as class activities. I should know the perfect reading materials for my students and the activities that will help them understand a concept more. I should also organize the classroom to make it conducive for learning (Garrett, 2014). For instance, I should know which students cannot sit next to each other and the groups in which students can work best. I should also monitor students, ensuring that they are grasping contents, completing their assignments, and improving their grades in general.

What are my students’ main responsibilities with regard to behavior and classroom management?

Students should be participative in class-activities and during lessons. They should ask and answer questions and complete and forward assignments. Students should also be accountable and responsible. They should recognize that they are part of the class community and, therefore, should be accountable for their actions in ways that foster a charismatic class environment. Responsibility fosters student learning and helps them to improve their grades. Students should also be inquisitive and eager to learn new things. Every class has defined culture, and the students should contribute towards maintaining this culture through discipline and good behaviors (Newman, 2019). Finally, students should assume duties that they are assigned to, such as arranging and cleaning the class.
