Classical Literature
Reading is an important concept in our daily development. Literature help individuals to identify with the ideals and truths of society at a greater level. Classical literature is not only relevant today because of the past it shows us but also because it gives us limelight of where we are going. The kinds of issues developed in classical literature are not limited to a specific period or place. They are a milestone in the world of literature. They have managed to spark a reading tradition and break the tradition and questioning norms and ideas that were originally in place.
During the last semester, I was privileged to come in contact with classical literature. After completing the class, I have benefited in several ways by learning new concepts and also refreshing myself on ideas that I already knew, which needed just a reminder. Amidst the deep negative content that I come across daily on social media, this literature was fundamental in teaching me lasting moral and intellectual ideologies.
My biggest hurdle in English has always been fast reading and the use of poor grammar. Classical writers have a unique way of writing their novels that keeps them interesting and motivating to read. As a result, I managed to increase indefinitely on my overall vocabulary and writing skills. I have even created a list of new vocabulary that I use daily. After delving into the works of these writers and thinkers, I have changed my perception of reading. Previously, studying seemed to do tiresome and involving, however, through lessons from some of the novels I have learned to read in a new type of way, not as a burden but as an enjoyable activity. I believe it will not only use this ability to conceptualize and gain reading, speaking, and writing but also build a strong reading practice in the future.
I have also learned significant life lessons. Classical literature acts as a mirror that we can see and gauge the lives of others to ourselves. We can use the books as a stepping stone to building our character by analyzing the good and bad points of the characters. For instance, a book like Oliver Twist allows us to learn different lessons as portrayed in the novel. Additionally, classical literature is a reflection of writings from an older period .thus is enhanced my mind to a perspective of a different world and historical perspective. Many of the tales in classical literature are based on history. Thus, I have gained a lot of historical knowledge and understanding of cultures and norms of other places that I would have otherwise not known. Additionally, reading literature that would have been boring otherwise has become exciting through the vibrant characters in these novels.
Lastly, classical literature depicts characters that have gone through difficult situations and circumstances and managed to overcome.in my daily life, I am faced with a difficult situation to the verge of giving up, but when I think of other people who have been through worse situations acts as a motivation to continue battling my everyday struggles. These characters portray district virtues of patience, perseverance, intentional friendship, and disciplines which are crucial practices in the life of every individual. I believe that the skills, abilities, and values I have gained during this unit will not only be useful for the short period of my schooling but also in life. Essentially I have shaped my personality and inner self through classical literature.it was certainly a privilege coming in contact with the materials.
