Blakeley, J. A., & Ribeiro, V. E. (2008). Early retirement among registered nurses: Contributing factors. Journal of Nursing Management, 16(1), 29-37.
Most nurse workers are taking early retirement which is affecting the current nursing workforce. Nurse workers are in reduced number ad early retirement can lead to more reduction, affecting the efficiency of treatment offered. The article intended to find out the factors that influence nurses to have early retirement as well as the incentives that should be put in place to lengthen their stay in employment.
A mail-out questionnaire was used among the 200 randomly selected nurses above the age 45, and the results revealed that only 71% of that nurse population planned to leave the premise by 60 years. The participants of the study also had a different view on incentives; thus, the article can be used to find out retention strategies that should be employed by healthcare system to retain a productive healthcare workforce.
The nursing shortage has been a significant problem in the healthcare system globally. Nurses are the most required population in the healthcare system due to the role they play, thus understanding the impact of the nursing shortage is critical to better patient outcome. This article aimed to find out the importance of nurse shortage in the quality of care, job satisfaction, and nurse stress while in the workplace. The exemplary research design was used to study the population at Polonnaruwa District General Hospital in Sri Lanka. The sample population was selected randomly and included nurses who worked in that hospital. Self-administered questionnaires were administered to those nurses, and statistical analysis was conducted. The analysis revealed a relationship between nurse shortage and the workload given to them. The results of the study indicated that nurses could have increased job satisfaction if they can manage workplace stress due to increased stress.
