Clinical research

Discussion

Question 1

Clinical research progressively produces significant levels of improved procedures of treatment and patient care (Kristensen, Nymann, & Konradsen, 2016). These procedures are capable of saving and improving the quality of life of patients if efficiently implemented. However, the practices and procedures recommended after successful medical researches take a long time before implementation (Kristensen, Nymann, & Konradsen, 2016). This variation in implementation is known as the research-practice gap and is common in numerous medical institutions, inclusive of the one in which I work.

The institution at which I am based uses Implementation Science to implement research findings into practice. One of the initiatives used to implement research evidence is the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) (Kristensen, Nymann, & Konradsen, 2016). This initiative helps to integrate research findings through policymaking and by larger, systematic and established procedures. Evidence-based practice helps medical institutions in bridging the gap between clinical study and practice (Kristensen, Nymann, & Konradsen, 2016). This bridging occurs through the exploration of implementation procedures that possess the capability of transferring, diffusing, and disseminating evidence-based knowledge to medical practitioners.

Question 2

Therapeutic misconception occurs when medical enthusiasts fail to understand the difference between clinical study or research and clinical care (Gearhart, 2018). The essence of clinical care is to treat a patient or eliminate suffering, while clinical research aims to scientifically analyze new medications, and not to grant personal treatment to study participants. The primary causes of therapeutic misconception are a failure of study participants to understand that the key reason for clinical research is the provision of general knowledge with no likely benefit, or regardless of any possible benefit, or with only the possibility of benefit to the participants.

It is essential for clinicians to alleviate therapeutic misconception among clinical study participants (Gearhart, 2018). Some subjects enroll for these studies with the idea that they might medically benefit from the research oblivious of the possible health risks to which they expose themselves. To eliminate this misconception, clinicians should ensure that the detailed consent process clearly states that taking part in a trial will not grant any treatment benefit, regardless of the existence of such possible benefit (Gearhart, 2018). The explanation of the consent process also helps participants to understand their rights to ensure that they do not claim stipends that were not offered to them due to their misconception of the clinical research.

Question 3

Research helps in the determination of effective practices and the improvement of patient care by nurses. BSN programs educate nurses on how to acquire, read, scrutinize, and implement nursing research (Stevens, 2013). Since new information constantly arises, it is essential that BSN-prepared nurses understand the significance of the research. Research also aids nurses to efficiently adapt to alterations in the healthcare industry, patient populations, and government policies. The more discoveries occur from research, the more the nursing practice diversifies. The information learned by students quickly becomes obsolete; therefore, having the capability to cope with new establishments in nursing and healthcare helps students in their careers (Stevens, 2013). Therefore, I extensively agree with the statement that higher education exposes one to research and thus allows one to develop an interest in evidence-based practice (EBP).

Since the effect of EBP is highly regarded in the nursing practice, the desire for evidence-based quality development is essential for restructuring patient care that is effective and efficient (Stevens, 2013). To implement this, initiatives like practice adoption, education system restructuring to fit all students, scientific involvement in new areas of research help both BSN and non-BSN students in engaging in research.
