Code of Ethical Conduct
The topic has been immensely resourceful for me. I have learned a lot about developmentally appropriate practice in observation and assessment to ensure sensitivity to the children’s culture, language, and capabilities. To support learning outcomes for the children in my care in relation to this topic, I will ensure that I use culturally responsive assessment strategies. This is because culture influences and shapes children’s development. As such, is it will be impossible to separate my children from their own culture. For instance, using the child’s preferred home language will enable me to better understand their linguistic skills.
To ensure alignment of my assessment practices to PILES domains and Minnesota’s state early learning standards, I will ensure that I thoroughly reread the standards and develop my assessments based on the standards. That way, I will be able to know what behaviors I observe are developmentally significant. I will also be able to plan my curriculum to observe and assess the skills stipulated in the standards as per the age of my children.
Going forward, I plan on using video recordings to record my data. This method is the most effective because it is possible to capture numerous developmental domains simultaneously. For instance, I will be able to get a full view of a child in the classroom as they move, play, interact, and engage in various activities in the different parts of the classroom. The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct provides that assessments be authentic and gather relevant information about a child, meaning that they should be carried out in an informal setting where the children are free to interact with their environment. Video recordings are the best suited to ensure adherence to this requirement. Also, video recordings are culturally and linguistically appropriate, as I can share the video with the family. This guarantees that families will understand and appreciate the current knowledge base of my early childhood center and how that integrates with their culture.
