The wake of the hurricane led to the destruction of more than 85% of island households displacing more than 50,000 residents. As a result, most of the water supply systems and supermarkets were destroyed. Most of the residents become were in so much need of water, shelter, and food. Thus, the entire area of Puerto Rico was stated to be a Federal Disaster Zone. The Federal Emergency Management agency took the responsibility of supplying essentials needs to the islands on the 22nd of September. Achievement of that was through the opening of the air bridge allowing three to four aircraft to the islands. In addition to that, the limited commercial traffic started again at Luis Munoz Marlin International Airport on the 22nd of September. As a result, there were dozens of commercial flights that operated daily as of the 26th of September 2017. Therefore, all of these flights were involved in taking the essential requirements to the people who were on the islands.
On 29th of September, there was a shift of the hospital ship USNS Comfort from left port to both Maria and Iran. The main goal was to give medication to the Hurricanes victims who were in the early stated areas. The arrival of the Comfort occurred some copal miles off the shore and around the island. Therefore, a variety of the patients were transferred to the ship by the helicopter after a referral by Puerto Rico’s Health Department. By the end of the 8th of November 2017, the Comfort health care providers had treated 1, 476 patients. As a result, the Pentagon made a reopen of the two main airfields in Puerto Rico. They began sending aircraft, specialized units, and hospital ships which resulted in to assistance of more patients.
