I.  Community Core

1.  History–Is there any pertinent history for your location (e.g., old, established neighborhoods; new subdivision)? Is it a rural, suburban, or urban community? What is your feeling of the population density?

From a historical perspective, Antioch, TN is one of the oldest city residential communities in the United States; it was inhabited in 1810. Most of the members of the population love being associated with the historical distinction of Antioch. This is why the historical features of the neighborhood and other artifacts are respected and protected (Gross, 2019). The US census data shows that the population density of Antioch, TN, is 2,382/sq. Mi. This indicates that the neighborhood can hold 2,832 people per square kilometer. The population of the town is 95,717. This is not a densely populated location.

2.  Demographics–What is the population of the community? Has the community experienced a recent increase or loss of population (in-migration versus out-migration)? What are the age, gender, and racial distribution of the community? Can you find birth and death rates for the community?According to the 2010 census, the population of Antioch, TN, grew by 64%. As of 2010, the population was approximated at 95,717. The high population growth rate is attributed to increasing in-migration into the community due to community development. There are better services, healthcare, and infrastructure, and the affordability of the multifamily residences that have been recently renovated (Gross, 2019). According to the residents, the community’s population is mostly white, with a considerable number of black Americans and other minority races. Census data shows that the population is 50.38% white, 27.66% black, 3.54 Asian, 1.88% mixed races, while other races make up 16.54%.
3.  Ethnicity–Do you note indicators of different ethnic groups (e.g., restaurants, festivals)? What signs do you see of different cultural groups, if any? Is there a predominant culture? There are several ethnic groups in Antioch, Tennessee, as there are several races in the community. This can be evident by the existence of several festivals that occur annually. For example, there is the African Heritage Festival that primarily represents black Americans. Moreover, some restaurants serve ethnic food in the neighborhood (Gross, 2019). Some restaurants are signs of different cultural groups, such as the Ethiopian Restaurant and Hai Woon Dai. There is no predominant culture in the neighborhood, as each race follows a specific religion.

4.  Religion–Are there churches, mosques, temples? Where are they located within the community? Any religious schools? Is there evidence of religious homogeneity or diversity? There are churches, temples, and mosques in the region. The worship centers are distributed according to the majority of the people occupying it (Gross, 2019). For example, if Christians dominate the area, churches are available and in close range. Although Christianity has the highest number of followers, religious diversity is present in the region, with approximately 82%.
II. Subsystems

1.  Physical Environment–How does the community look? What is the age and condition of the majority of housing? Do housing conditions vary in different parts of the community? How is the land used (open space, residential, agricultural, commercial, industrial)? Is there any evidence of pollution (water, soil, air) or environmental concerns (rodents, trash)? What is the size (e.g., square miles, blocks)?

The community primarily looks like a modern city. Although it is not densely populated in terms of building. The buildings range from old to modern types of housing, with the majority consisting of new buildings. Some of the building was built as early as 1985 and still exist as residential areas (Gross, 2019). Housing conditions vary from one area to another as people tend to build houses relating to their culture. Hence, Asians establish buildings related to their culture, and this applies to other cultural groups.

The most significant percentage of land in the neighborhood is used for residential purposes and recreation activities, as there is evidence of parks. The most significant form of pollution is the air caused by a gas compression station located in the region.

2.  Health & Social Services–What are the significant causes of morbidity and mortality? What is the infant mortality rate and teenage pregnancy rate? Are there any ‘traditional” healers (e.g., curanderos, herbalists)? Are there clinics, ambulances, hospitals, practitioners’ offices, home health agencies, urgent or emergency care centers, nursing homes, social service facilities, mental health services? The primary of mortality in the area is heart diseases that are followed by cancer (Rosen, 2015). Moreover, the neighborhood is ranked 10 out of 51 when it comes to teenage pregnancy, considering females between the ages of 15-19.

There exist herbalists who use herbal as a way of treating patients (Rosen, 2015). The healthcare sector is well-maintained with several clinics, hospitals, and other medical facilities available.

3.  Economy and Safety–Do you see signs of economic growth such as real estate signs or new construction, remodeling, or street repair? Do you see signs of community decline such as trash, abandoned cars, graffiti or rundown housing?

Are there industries, stores, places for employment? What are occupations (retail, industrial, farming, service, government, tourism, or unemployed) represented in the community? Where do people grocery shop, inside or outside of the city?

Is there a difference in types of stores available in different neighborhoods or parts of the community?

What is the unemployment rate? What types of protective services are there (e.g., fire, police)?  What kinds of crimes are committed here? What is the geographic distribution of crimes? Are there any signs of neighborhood watch programs?

Economic growth is evident as there are several developments in the area. Moreover, there is a construction of modern buildings showing a positive shift in economic growth (Rosen, 2015). Industries are also located in the region, for example, Conklin Metal Industry. The rate of unemployment is approximately 3.2%, and there is a job growth rate of 2.4%.

The stores in the area do not differ from those in the neighboring community. Additionally, the rate of crime is high, starting from robbery to murder.

  4. Transportation –How do people get around? What type of private and public transportation is available? Do you see buses, bicycles, taxis? Are there sidewalks, bike trails? Is getting around in the community possible for people with disabilities? The primary mode of transport is using the road, although the railway and shuttle transport is also evident in the area (Rosen, 2015). Sidewalks are also evident in the area as people walk along the main roads
5.  Politics and Government–What is the local governmental jurisdiction of the community, and how is it organized (e.g., elected mayor, city council with single-member districts)? What services does the local government provide to residents? The region follows the administration style that is used in the country (Rosen, 2015). Moreover, it is under the mayor of Nashville. The government set up is primarily metropolitan government and is headed by the mayor.
6.  Public Health–What is the local health department? How big is the agency, and what population does it serve? What services are provided? The local health department is the metro public health department of Nashville. The body organizes and executes all the health duties in the region (Rosen, 2015).
7.  Education–Are there schools in the area? Do they look well-maintained, and how are they rated academically? What are the drop-out rates? How far are the schools from the center of the community? Are there any school health services? Are there any higher-education schools available in the community? Are there any libraries? There are several schools in the region, starting from high school to universities (Rosen, 2015). The residents do not complain about the school administration, and this means that the institutions are well-maintained.
8.  Recreation–Where do children play? What are the significant forms of entertainment? What facilities for recreation do you see? Are there any movie theatres, bowling alleys, or amusement parks in the area? Are there any recreation programs aimed at specific groups such as seniors or preschoolers? The region has several recreation facilities. Children may go to the parks and swimming pools to refresh their bodies (Rosen, 2015). This also applies to adults in the area. Hence recreation facilities are excellent in the area.
III. Interviews

The Residents–How do people feel about the community? What do they identify as their strengths? Do people feel safe? Any problems that they see in the community? Any changes they would like to see made?  Ask several people from different groups (e.g., old, young, field worker, factory worker, professional, minister, housewife) and keep track of who answers. DO NOT AGGREGATE YOUR INTERVIEWS. STATE WHO SAID WHAT. Attempt to gain interviews from people whom you believe might be “stakeholders,” if possible.

The residents have different perceptions regarding the area, with some satisfied while others are complaining. People do not feel safe in the region due to the crime rates recorded in the city annually (Rosen, 2015).
2.  Your Perceptions–General statements about the “health” of this community.
What are its strengths or assets?Upon completion of the windshield survey, what health-related problems can you identify for this community? (Be specific).
The health facilities in the area primarily average, with some residents being satisfied while others are not. This is a result of the different services provided in the area. For example, ambulance services are not readily available when required. Hence the healthcare department needs to be improved to be able to satisfy the residents.
