Comparison of Movies Pan Labyrinth and Movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Pan’s Labyrinth is a Mexican-Spanish that was produced n the year 2006. The dark fantasy film was directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Ivana. Movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is a traditional Chinese film that was produced in 2000 by Wang Huiling. Ang Lee directed the film. The two movies are among the top-ranked movies. The producers apply various literary devices to achieve the objectives of the film. The characters and styles are creatively chosen to bring forth the main themes of the movies. Several similarities and differences are evident in the movies from the setting, styles, themes, and characterization.
To begin, the two movies utilize computer-generated imagery in their effects. For instance, in the film, Pan Labyrinth, the mandrake root is a combination of CGI and animatronics. High levels of technology were employed in designing some of the imageries. The director had the intention of making the fairies look like little monkeys. However, the animation company had an idea of creating the fairies with wings made from leaves. Also, Jones is seen spending an average of almost five hours seated on the makeup chair as the team members also strive to apply the makeup. On the other hand, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon also uses technology to generate some aspects of imagery (Lee). Some graphics used in the movie are generated electronically.
Moreover, the two movies bring out the theme of feminism. The two films attempt to distinguish the roles, and the position gender holds in families. For example, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, some martial arts were known to be products designed by women (Lee). The movie categorizes roles and specifies the ones that are performed by women and the ones conducted by men. Also, the movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon presents women as the central characters though they are striving to survive and withstand in a society dominated by violent males. A good example is Ofelia, who is struggling to survive the control of Vidal. Vidal claims that he values his unborn child and heir than he does to his wife.
Regardless of all the above similarities, the two movies still bring forth some differences. For example, the setting for the two films is different. The settings differ in time, place, and background, some aspects of characterization. To begin, for the movie Pan Labyrinth, we are introduced to characters ailing from totally different classes (Del Toro). For example, men are portrayed as people with control in society. It is due to this fact that Ofelia and Mercede are struggling to break free against the male-dominated society. On the contrary, the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, starts by introducing us to a community in which men and women value each other. The only differences were emerging when it comes to the roles.
In conclusion, the movies Pan Labyrinth and Movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon portray several similarities and differences between them. The differences are seen in terms of setting, themes, literary elements, and characterization. For instance, in both movies, the issue of feminism is evident. The two movies portray a distinction between males and women. In the film, Pan Labyrinth and Movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, women have specific roles to perform and men. The other movie portrays women as the weak subjects in the society that are struggling to thrive in the male-dominated society.
