Constraints around Backup Strategies
Data related disasters are among the things that most organizations dread of because of the losses and risks associated with them. These disasters lead to downtime that result to massive losses. An effective backup strategy is the ultimate solution to challenges around both natural and human-made disasters (Faisal, 2018). However, there are various obstacles to finding and implementing an effective backup solution based on the specific data requirements.
One of the challenges is budget. Many organizations can hardly secure an appropriate budget when it comes to implementing the correct backup strategy. Data backup infrastructure are costly, especially for small enterprises. Even already established businesses experience budget constraints because of the maintenance and upgrade required in keeping a reliable backup.
Functionality is another constraint in implementing data backups. Although organizations are not limited to the amount of data they can collect, most are limited by factors, such storage and backup. Other organizations face compliance challenges. Therefore, the kind of backup that an organization uses depends on various capabilities. There is also a challenge with system flexibility because the rate at which data is created, collected, and stored is unpredictable. The utmost goal of organizations is to use the data they collect to expand their market presence and competitive advantage. Growth curves in data collection and storage require organizations to update their business systems, structures, and procedures frequently to support various developments. Similarly, an organization’s backup strategies need to evolve to accommodate these changing circumstances to ensure they are secure despite size (Lo, Harmon, & Northwest, 2012). Achieving this level of flexibility is a challenge as expertise is required and subsequent costs.
These constraints are solved using individual approaches. However, information governance can be used as an effective solution to the constraints around backups. By understanding the value of specific information sets, it is easier to establish a backup strategy for them based on an organization’s capability.
