Content discussion
Both sculptural reliefs are similar because they depict mythological scenes/figures and gods. They are different because the Greek relief shows fundamental cultural principles while the right one shows honoring of gods, goddesses, ancestors, leaders, and philosophers. Both fragments are part of more massive decorative campaigns: the Greek one is low relief, and the Roman is high relief. They equally represent both culture and history though here we only see the pictorial representation. Though the manner of representation seems similar, the content present in the art of Greek and Romans differ greatly.
Formal Discussion
Both reliefs exemplify the Classical style because, natural features, they both rely on a pictorial manner of representation. The Greek relief uses the techniques of modeling and assembling to achieve a more attractive look. The Roman relief is more realistic in look because it uses the sculptural technique of assembling. The Greek relief has a background pictorial space while the Roman one has greater frontality. Though the Romans copied this art from the Greeks, there are few elements that they added on it to make it more realistic and attractive.
Historical context discussion
The styles of these artworks are mosaics and amphora, and they are similar because the Romans copied the Greek pictorial conventions along with their sculpture. The reason why the Panathenaic Procession was created is to honor the goddess of Athena. At the same time, the Imperial Procession exists because of its role in achieving status and establishing societal legitimacy through one’s background and family. The Athenians conveyed through this artwork that they are culturists. The Romans are merely celebrating a culture. The Romans art is specifically based on what happened historically as compared to the Greeks who were more culturally based.
