Crime prevention
In the past few decades, crime has been a significant threat to society. Crime is a multi-faceted phenomenon such as Homicide, Sexual assault, Human trafficking, Drug trafficking are among some. Hence, the delegation of chile wants to talk about this topic to try to bring out the possible solutions to crime prevention and provide criminal justice.
Crime prevention can contribute to the advancement to a better economy; the delegation of chile recognizes without proper practices implemented for crime prevention; many country’s economies can hit a hard turn as it discourages domestic and foreign direct investments; it reduces firm’s competitiveness and reallocates resources creating uncertainty and inefficiency. Several policies can be put forward to give a significant return on investment in terms of savings in justice, welfare, health care, and social and human capital protection. To instead counter this problem, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has worked closely with the government of several different countries to tackle this problem. At the end of the 1990s and the early 2000s Chile adopted two crime-fighting plans, Plan Cuadrante and Plan Comuna Segura. Plan Cuadrante is a program that connects the community and the police to enhance police monitoring in a given geographical area. At the same time, the Plan Comuna Segura is a program designed to involve the community in preventing crimes through initiatives proposed by the community itself. Hence adopting such programs can provide more criminal justice and reduces crime rates.
Hence, Chile believes the adoption of these two programs can protect society and help reduce crime rates. As stated by the president, Sebastian piñera, “It seems that we have to keep climbing on the road and we will continue to pursue political and criminal responsibilities either in national or international courts.”
Chile has always supported innovative and effective ways of establishing cooperation within and between regional organizations for crime prevention. Hence, it would request the united nations and many government federations to implement programs that indulge the society in tackling crime for the welfare of the citizens.
