Culture Experience
Culture assists in defining factors of religion, tradition, and norms. In my view, culture would include those activities we find dear to us, such as cuisine and family orientation. I value my traditions because they return my mind home whenever I am lonely. I want to discuss a different cultural experience said to me by a friend from Africa.
My friend grew up in Africa, a land he describes as evergreen. He explained that in Africa, a family is equally important. However, the value of each child is determined by gender or order of birth. For instance, firstborns are regarded as superior to their siblings and have more decision making power. Females are mostly seen as outcasts mainly because they get married off.
African cuisine is mostly traditional, and the majority are meat lovers. Courtesy is also significant, and you only eat when welcomed. However, there are individual meals that are only meant for males. I found this suspicious and disapproving. He, however, explained to me that it is intended to create respect between the man and his family.
We were able to cook fish-the African way. Although it looked different on completion, the preparation method was the same as my tradition. I enjoyed the meal as it offered an unusual yet satisfying flavor. I also noticed that my friend was able to eat almost every part. Surprised, I decided to ask him if that is the norm. He told me that varies depending on the community one hails from.
Cultural experiences have given me an understanding of how differently people perceive things. While it is difficult to comprehend some of the lessons, I find it enjoyable to learn them. In learning a new culture, we can respect people’s opinions. Moreover, it allows us to interact freely and create memorable situations.
