Deaf Culture
Deaf culture refers to values, believes, traditions, arts, and history of a community of people influenced by deafness and communicates through the use of sign language. Various people view deafness differently, especially those who can hear. To many, it is a disability that makes the victims appear lacking from a normal human being. They capitalize the “D” to change to the attitude of America’s mainstream (Clason, 2019). However, to the deaf community, they view it as a difference in the human community and not a disability.
This minority group faces challenges such as their education. They are often handled in a way that they are to join the community later in life. Among children, most medical specialists discourage the use of sign language and encourage that they develop the vocals first (Jenkins, 2019). This makes it difficult for them. It is inherent that this group should be viewed equally with the hearing ones and therefore, require the attention they require and not treated as though they formed a different species in the race.
To those who are ignorant of the deaf culture, they should be taught the importance of the culture. The deaf community itself appreciates it and takes culture. This can be done through mass communication and other communication methods to reach out to these people not to be ignorant of the deaf culture. They should learn to embrace it and help the deaf in cultivating it.
The most important thing about having courses on deaf culture is that it helps people to appreciate it. The learner can understand the importance of the culture to the deaf community itself. I think that it is something worth to be studied so that communication for the group is made easier. Learning it systematically increases the number of people who understand it and makes it easy for the deaf to communicate.
