Democratic governing structure
Despite the availability of vast natural resource and democratic governing structure, West African occupies bottom rank in the United Nations (UN) development index. Similarly, West African countries performance is poor, according to the World Bank and Transparency International indexes responsible for measuring leadership and governance systems. Recent reports have indicated the roles and operation of the countries in West Africa in promoting transatlantic trade. However, the region is considered to take part in illegal migrant and illicit drug trafficking to European countries and immediate markets. These are attributed to the desire of making quick and easy money eroding balanced socio-economic development.
The trends are facilitated by the existence of pervasive and corrupt governance systems led by transnational organized criminal organizations. Ultimately, it has led to escalating state and the process of administering justice and enforcement of the rule of law. These contribute towards diminishing of the ability of the states in West Africa to guarantee secure investments. Thus, the primary role of the countries in the region is to make a proper review of economic laws and regulations. By doing so, the countries will be capable of implementing rational economic policies. The purpose is to mitigate transnational organized criminal activities.
