It will help eliminate solid waste and lower the greenhouse gas intensity. The city will benefit from less carbon dioxide and methane in the air. However much we try to reduce, reuse, or recycle solid waste, our households generate more waste. This is because the energy produced at waste-to-energy plants combust waste that does not generate methane as it is the case with landfills. The energy produced can offset the harmful gases that may have been generated from natural gas and coal plants. Waste-to-energy plants are the only plants that reduce greenhouse gases. Also, the energy produced at these plants is reliable baseload power. It provides the opportunity for Doral city to not only sell electricity, but also provide steam that is supplied to households, industries, and public buildings.
