Discussion 9.1

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has various guidance equipment and material that highlight functional requirements, performance goals as well as design objectives. According to FAA SMS, critical components of SMS include Safety Policy, Safety Risk management, Safety Assurance, and Safety Promotion (Stolzer, 2017). As per the FAA’s Implementation Guide, an implementation plan is made to seal the gaps within the SMS framework. The gaps consist of those components within the SMS plan that have not met the objectives and stands of SMS implementation. The FAA’s SMS Implementation guide key steps of the implementation plans that are outlined as follows:

Mapping and analyzing the existing organization

Determining the extent to which the organization already complies with the needs of 14 CFR part 5

Submitting the plan to the FAA for approval

Developing a strategy to conform to the needs of part 5 with the organization has not incorporated

The FAA additionally outlines the guidance and tools of the SMS procedures in the AVS guidance (VS 8000.367, SMS program office guidance ((AC) 120-92) and the FAA guidance (VS 8000.1).

Hi Angela,

Great work in identifying some of the tools that the FAA uses to guide the SMS implementation plans and tools. I agree with the proposals you have made that the implantation process can be broken down in the mentioned steps. Are the various tools of guidance provided by FAA similar in some way?

Hi Richard,

Great work in identifying the critical implementation plans as provided by the FAA. I also agree with the factor that there are other tools of the implementation plan by FAA, including voluntary gap analysis and laying out of implementation levels. Where are the implementation plans of the FAA located?

Hi Henry,

Great work in outlining the specific procedures and being concise. I concur with the fact that gap analysis is also an essential step that ensures that existing programs meet programs. Are there any other circulars provided by FAA that guide the implementation plan. `
