Traditionally, literacy is mostly associated with the ability to read and write. However, through my in-depth understanding, although regarded as a universal fundamental right critical in daily living and social aspect of life, educators have the role of the reshaping literacy as interactive experience among members of the society. Literacy is a social enterprise that requires interactions; it’s culturally transmitted and thrives in social contexts. The primary definition of literacy should be expounded and elaborated further to incorporate social aspects critically. My literacy memories are based on the purpose of literacy, which, according to my understanding, is a social context. Literacy is developed based on the social interactions of members of the community. Literacy is a fundamental right as it defines society. Society should not only regard it as a privilege but also a basic right as it forms the foundation of an individual’s success in society. Literacy empowers an individual to contribute to the communities.

Symbolism is among the significant elements of literature. My understanding of concepts expounded my literacy knowledge significantly. Symbolism entails the use of an object to represent an idea artistically. An item, place, individual, or even a word can be used to symbolically convey an idea. Symbolism is a stylistic device in literacy that authors employ to express their notions and enhance their writing skills. Symbolism, as a literacy device, highlights critical concepts in a text, enhances the narrative, and assists in developing the plot and theme of a writer. Symbolism in literature also assists in the improvement of pacing and flow of writing. For instance, a dove symbolizes love, while darkness represents evil or even death. The use of symbolism not only assists the writer in developing the plot but also enables the reader or the audience to understand the message conveyed by the author.
