Diversity in views

Diversity in views has been one of the most critical aspects that have transformed American society. Through Americans, Americans have come to embrace differences among people. Such differences include race, skin color, sexual orientation, religious Americans, and personal beliefs on political systems. Increased diversity promotes increased tolerance to differences in ideas among people in society.

Despite the many pros that are associated with increased diversity, several social vices have also been observed. An example is increased racism and discrimination against certain groups or marginalized societies in the past. Such instances have made it difficult for people from certain backgrounds to progress, as would be if they were from other majority communities. There have been many draconian laws, such as the Jim Crow laws that have hindered the progression of America due to discrimination in the past (Oppenheimer, 2017). These examples offer an indication of the dangers that are associated with diversity if it is not welcomed.

The role of women in society was historically restricted to home chores and looking after their children’s needs. However, this changed a lot at the start of the 20th century when women were allowed to participate in elections and contend with their male counterparts. One of the main movements that helped change this was the Women’s Suffrage Movement that began in the 1840s (Mowery, 2016). The movement called for equal rights for everyone regardless of their gender.

The aim was to push for women to be part of elections. Doing this led to a scenario where the rights and obligations of women in society expanded. Despite the expanded roles of women in society today, they continue to face similar abuse. Gender discrimination and harassment in the workplace are still very common, which hinders the progress of women in society.
