Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this work. It was an adventure-filled piece, the narration of the story of an old woman in her arduous journey up and down the hill and through the forest into the town. The story is fascinating because it is quite rare to find an older woman with the strengths tenacity, determination, and fearlessness that Phoenix has. I was motivated to read this work because I felt like I owed it to Phoenix. Reading this work, I had personalized her journey and experience so much; I had to finish it with her. She was indeed a remarkable woman who was not deterred by her age, or external circumstances, but kept ongoing. I owed it to her to continue reading to the end.

Yes, my impression of the story changed radically from the beginning to the end. As I started reading the piece, I thought that the lady was too old and frail, and would probably not be able to make it even for a few meters.  After all, the narrator’s description of the woman portrayed a lady who was weak, tired with old age, and frail. In my head, I thought she wouldn’t even stand for a few minutes. However, towards the end, I was awed by the remarkable strength and the tenacity of this woman. She was fearless, determined, and strong. Her age did not deter her. I seriously had a lot of respect for her after her long journey.

Yes, my reading of this work had been deeply enhanced by my personal experience.  I understand what she felt and went through because of having a sick relative (in this case, her grandson). Indeed, having a sick person is emotionally draining, stressful, and disheartening. So I understood when she was willing to go through the long trip, despite all potential dangers, just to get medication for her grandson. It’s an experience that no older adult should have to go through.

I disagree with the values portrayed in the story. First, there should be personalized home healthcare services for people who cannot make it to medical centers. Like in this case, it was unethical for the nurse to let Phoenix keep traversing the long, risky path just to get medicine for her grandson. The hospital should have arranged for visits to her house, to examine the boy, and administer medication.
