documentary
The reason behind the documentary and what it is about is closely linked to the project of the documentary. Money and Medicine were created to evaluate the reasons behind the increase in healthcare costs within the United States. The documentary focuses on the risks that face over-treatment and over-diagnosing while researching into the ways waste permeates the human medical system. This documentary further complements the creators’ project in that it focuses on ways in which individual hospitals work towards creating a less-expensive and higher quality alternative to the current system. All the aspects mentioned above enrich the message that is being passed through the documentary.
The documentary has numerous terms and statements that stand out. One such example is, “we have this idea in this country that when it comes to healthcare more is better (Tubi).” This statement by Shannon Brownlee depicts the lengths at which most Americans would predominantly go to get the best healthcare, thus increasing cost due to demand increase. Another keyword from medical practitioner Elliott Fisher states that “about 30% of United States healthcare spending is devoted to unnecessary services, and that’s, you know $800 billion” (Tubi). The statement mentioned above by Elliott Fisher further expands the overall concept of the documentary. It shows how much people are willing to spend on procedures that are deemed unnecessary. I find these two statements quite enlightening when it comes to an understanding of the concept and message of the documentary.
The authors of the documentary are highly thorough in their approaches in the film. This specification is done mainly to give an accurate and descriptive account of the subject at hand from qualified personnel and stakeholders in the industry. I would say that the authors have not limited themselves and use their approaches as directly as they can for clarity and transparency.
