Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that makes it hard for an individual to read. The difficulty is associated with identifying sounds of speech and relating to the correct words or letters. Moesha might be suffering from dyslexia. Some of its symptoms include reading below the expected level, difficulty spelling, avoiding reading, spending an unusually long time to read, and difficulty in differentiating words.
Moesha portrays nearly all symptoms of dyslexia. She avoids reading by doing anything possible to avoid reading. Moreover, her teacher complains that she is misbehaving during reading time and she was not making enough progress in reading as expected. Additionally, she spends time building castles with books at home when it comes to reading time. When her dad wants to reward her for reading books, she uses her toddler brother’s book which has about five words only.
Several solutions can help Moesha to read. Some of them are teaching Moesha ways to comprehend so that she can get meaning of what she is reading for example through illustrations. Moreover, the dad can ask the teacher or get a tutor to give her additional help in reading. Also, she can listen to audiobooks as an alternative to reading. Additionally, the father and the teacher can collaborate to acknowledge small efforts that Moesha makes in reading. They can encourage her to know her strengths and help her in working on them.
