Effective Communication Strategy for Leaders

Becoming a good listener is an excellent strategy to enhance clear and complete communication in an organization. I would allow an upward type of communication and listening to ensure that listening strategy becomes effective (Higgins, 2018). First, attentive listeners learn more from others and enable one to know and understand employees, fellow leaders, managers, and customers. When a leader listens and gets full information from the followers, he/she knows how to communicate to them as audiences effectively (In Worthington & In Bodie, 2020).

Secondly, listening promotes greater clarity. Listening before responding makes one understand what members are trying to say. It avoids confusion, misunderstandings, and conflicts and therefore facilitates effective conversation. For instance, when the workforce communicates freely and willingly with leaders, much information can be obtained pertaining to the organization’s work environment and problems. Upward communication and attentive listening will lead to clear, complete, and effective communication in an organization where leaders and employees will have feedback (In Worthington & In Bodie, 2020).

Thirdly, being a good listener attracts storytellers who will be ready to share their stories. A leader who listens to people will know who is intelligent and who is not, who is emotional and who is not, and who can be a delegate. Furthermore, attentive listening promotes a good relationship between leaders and their followers hence facilitating communication (Higgins, 2018). It is a great thing to communicate with friends or those who relate with leaders well since they also understand that a leader also listens to them without contemplation. Listening leaders tend to be good communicators since they employ an approach that satisfies followers because they know their followers’ needs. Therefore, I would be a good and attentive listener to understand how I can approach group members.

Finally, careful listening allows a leader to process feedback that focuses on the followers‘ specific needs (Higgins, 2018). For example, when listening to employees complains about the salary, different employees will have different financial needs, and getting to understand their claims will enable a leader to effectively communicate back addressing their issues. (In Worthington & In Bodie, 2020). To conclude, I would employ an attentive or careful listening strategy with the intent of understanding and feedback and upward communication towards clear, complete, and effective communication.
