EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL ON CRIME RATES.
Introduction
Alcohol is still an intoxicating and addictive substance that can have negative effects on the human mind and body though it is easy and legally obtained. Alcohol is said to damage a person’s capacity to make a rational decision and also contributes to a reduction of inhibition, and this has, made alcohol number one cause of aggressive and reckless criminal behaviour. (McMurran, M. (2013;2012;). Prolonged intake of alcohol significantly increases someone’s risk of committing violent offences. The excess taking of alcohol can lead to an instant change of some one’s life and may put other people into trouble. This brings about severe consequences such as being jailed, pay legal fee and other court penalties. Therefore, alcohol is said to have various effect on crime and in a various way. (Mattick, R. P. (2011
Summary of some off the effects of alcohol on crime rate discussed below:
Alcohol contributes to violence which are crimes this ranges from domestic violence whereby if a man is addicted to liquor he is not able to meet the family needs and at time is not able to make clear decision therefore the woman is a made to carry all the activities of feeding the kids and also taking care of them. Due to poor decision making the man may acquire advice from the fellow and ending the crisis in the family hence contributing to domestic violence. (Cunningham, R. M., (2015).
Alcohol taken in excessive leads to a lack of money to purchase more and therefore many people engage themselves in a robbery so that they can acquire some money to purchase more. Those people may also engage themselves in bad influential groups simply because they are not able to make the right decision due to the effect of alcohol on their brain. Therefore, alcohol contributes to a range percentage of robbers.
High incidences of child abuse have been contributed to by alcohol. If the parents are involved in alcohol and they can provide the basic need to their children, then the children are forced to search for jobs so that they can acquire their basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing. (Cunningham, R. M., (2015). Therefore, if the children are not able to acquire those job, they are forced to move to the streets hence leading to smuggling of goods from passes by. Alcohol, therefore, in this case, lead to increase in crime rate in towns hence making the urban centres a hard place for people to live due to increase insecurity.
Sexual immorality and assault also are highly contributed to by alcohol. Alcohol is said to have a strong effect on the brain, and therefore, people are not able to make the right decision. In this case, most of the people who are sexually abused they are abused when they are drunk, or the person who abused them was intoxicated. The rape case is mostly done by people who are drunk and are under the influence of alcohol this kind of crime makes the society feel bitter and insecure because they do not know what will have to happen next. (Volkov, A. Y. (2018)
A lot of murder are associated with alcoholic people. It is said that most of the people who carry out murder are always under the influence of alcohol. Therefore, many people lose their lives simply because some people who are alcoholic want to revenge on something or there is some disagreement. And when they are convicted in court, they begin defending themselves that they could never have done such a thing.
Impaired judgment is contributed to by excessive use of alcohol whereby one is not able to think in the right manner and this contributes to crimes because one is not able to judge what is right and what is wrong. They are not able to clearly define their lines off a boundary due to the poor judgment.
Unintentionally injuries may arise due to use of alcohol; this may include road accidents, falls burns and also drowns. This mostly arises because the alcoholic is not able made to make the right judgment, and they are not sober to understand what is going on. Intentional accidents and injuries may also arise due to alcoholism; this may include the firearm injuries sexual assault and also domestic violence. (McMurran, M. (2013;2012;).
Alcoholism contributes to blackout; this is a situation whereby the drunk person is not able to recall anything that happens when they are drunk, and therefore this highly contributes to increase in crime such as rape results.
Corruption also has been contributed to by alcohol, especially in big offices. The people managing the offices if they are engaged in alcohol they highly contribute bribes begin accepted to secure their jobs and so that they can feel protected. ( Volkov, A. Y. (2018)
Conclusion
Alcohol leads to poor decision making for an alcoholic person and therefore, this contributes to increased crime rate because poor decisions are made. Hence alcohol is termed to have a significant influence on crime rates, and it should, therefore, be controlled. (Mattick, R. P. (2011
