Electives for a business major student
I am a business major student, taking three core curriculum classes and have the decision to see what elective better suites me. Taking into consideration the three elective classes that could benefit me the most, I first have to evaluate them using two principles of economic decisions. The first principle is Principle 1: People Face Trade-offs which states that in order to achieve what we want, we have to give something up in return. The second principle is The Cost of Something Is What You Give Up to Get It. This principle states that the cost of something might not be as “in your face” as it should be but it is still present.
Guiding myself by Principle 1: People Face Trade-offs, I have to judge which class is going to benefit me in the future. For example, one of the three classes might be the hardest but it would benefit me to take that class and learn a skill or gain knowledge that I could use in the future. Rather than taking the easy course, I would sacrifice that elective spot to further my knowledge that might benefit me in the long run in my career.
The second principle to guide myself by would be: The Cost of Something Is What You Give Up to Get It. What this principles implies is not the monetary value but rather what you get out of it. When choosing an elective, the choice I’m most considering would be the elective that helps me improve the most but is also the most time consuming. Being that this elective is the most time consuming and I would have to take it along with the other 3 core courses, I would need to quit my day job. Even though I would have to sacrifice a steady income, I’m sure the pros outweigh the cons.
At the end of my decision making, I would definitely go with the course that is the most time consuming but that has a better knowledgeable outcome than my other choices. Sure, going with the “easy A” would be the easiest way to go but is it the best choice? That’s what is the most important at the end of it all. With these principles guiding my decision making, I believe that they would help me better understand how making sacrifices would benefit me most in the future.
