Employers to determine the wages they can charge the employees
Unions have made it easy for employees to communicate with their employers. Employees were able to air out their aggrievances at the workplace. They were able to educate the employees on their rights at the workplace and created an environment where employees felt safe and heard. They enabled employees with similar social classes to come together and form rules and regulations meant to protect the workers from any exploitation by their employers. They came up with laws and regulations that ensured that the employees had safe working conditions and that if they got any injuries at the workplace, they would be compensated. However, unions have become a menace as they have made it impossible for employers to fire employees that are redundant and do not offer quality services. Unions have also made it impossible for employers to determine the wages they can charge the employees.
Personal connectivity
I worked at a company where we were paid based on the number of bags that we managed to sew. I had colleagues who would skip work, and others would come to work but would lazy around, forcing me to overwork myself so that we would be able to reach our daily target. I also took it upon myself to inform my supervisor of any mistakes that I noticed on the fabric and also made sure that I corrected any faults that I found on the bags that my friends had sown. We, however, were paid the same amount of money even though I had overworked myself. Our trade union decided that they would cover up my colleagues’ laziness to protect them from getting fired. They also did not make sure that I was compensated for the extra work I did, which was unjust because there are very many people who could have been employed by this organization. They would deliver quality work, yet the union was protecting lazy members.
Meaningful ideas
Unions should ensure that there is accountability. In the case of teachers, they should write down how they carried out their day-to-day activities so that it is easy for the school to identify teachers with exemplary performance so that it is easy to reward them. Teachers that have poor performance, on the other hand, should be fired. Parents should also be allowed to rate the performance of the teachers on a global scale. This will help the school get rid of redundant teachers; it will also help the government enforce strict measures when the teachers are still in college. The standards will ensure that lazy students that want to become teachers are kicked out of the program.
Change
Unions should not shield teachers that perform poorly so that they do not get fired. This affects the child’s education in the long run, and most of the students end up not graduating because they do not get a quality education. The teachers who do not perform well should be fired from the schools where they operate so that others can learn from them. On the other hand, the teachers who perform well should be rewarded to motivate them to work harder. They become more passionate about ensuring that the lives of the students are not affected by their being offered poor quality education by their teachers. Unions should protect their members, but they should also be interested in ensuring that their members’ skills are utilized in the best way and that they are, in return offering quality education to students.
