Environmental Leadership and Sustainability Management
Question One
Environmental Protection Agency is in charge of monitoring the air emissions from stationary sources. The three dimensions of environmental justice include procedural justice, distributive, and justice of recognition. The approach is suitable as it ensures equality and the effective distribution of resources. It mainly looks at the allocation of resources across the globe in that the less fortunate are recognized, and also the fair distribution of the resources. It promotes long term sustainability of the resources in the atmosphere as the resources are distributed fairly, and due to the allocation, fewer resources go to waste.
Question Two
The life cycle assessment on the production of electricity from coal was done to examine conservation aspects of existing and future coal boiler systems. That of crude oil is done in several steps, such as refinery inventory being put together. The nuclear energy life cycle is based on high-temperature helium and cooled reactor and also gas turbine. The lifecycle of wind energy allows all the engineers to assess the impacts on the environment in all the stages of wind production in energy production. Hydrogen fuel is produced from methane or by the electrolysis of water. The most sustainable is that of crude oil, as it can easily be managed and controlled.
Question Three
The general public can ensure that they do not pollute the environment. For instance, they should avoid burning trash and other materials, using gas-powered equipment, and reduce the number of trips taken in a car.
Question Four
Environmental licensing minimizes and prevents the amounts of discharge in the air and water. It is not sustainable for our society in the long run since the continuous emotion of waste may end up causing severe environmental issues.
Question Five
Most of the water pollution comes from non-point areas since they are many and cannot be regulated as compared to point sources such as oil refineries. It is also caused mainly by industry sources as the industries are many, and they also emit large amounts of waste.
Question Six
Some of the measures that could be taken to reduce water pollution include reducing the amount of chemical disposal in sinks, not overusing fertilizers, and also not throwing garbage into water sources such as beaches and rivers. Eater pollution can also be reduced by approving all landowners who want to build near water sources since there are endangered species such as fish that need to be protected from water pollution.
Question Seven
Some of the challenges include the fact that people justify any amount of waste they emit since there are no standards for the right amount of waste to be emitted. Also, due to the policy, there is increased pollution since everyone aims to justify their waste will not affect the environment, but in one way or another, it does.
Question Eight
It would be sustainable sine when looking at the environment, there will be reduced pollution, and socially the people will live in a pleasant environment since there will be no pollution. Economically, however, the companies may have to incur extra costs as they try to neutralize the carbon footprint, but in the long run, these expenses will be reduced.
Question Nine
The members of the society should get to know the rules of recycling, avoid using plastic bags, and rely more on reusable containers since they will not have to dispose of many often. They can also reduce the generation of harmful waste, and for the manufacturing companies, they should aim to recycle and to treat most of the waste materials, thereby minimizing waste.
Question Ten
Some of the ways the act has promoted sustainability are through the development of regulations and policies that ensure there is a balance between the social, environmental, and economic aspects. It has helped ensure that there is balance by putting all dimensions of sustainability into consideration before making any decisions. The act, however, has its failures in that it has not considered human behavior in that there is a significant change in human behavior since more industries are being established.
Question 11
The introduction of agents such as fertilizers is sustainable since the fertilizers are needed in the growing of the crops. Also, they only become a hazard once they are washed away into the rivers. The practices are still permitted since they enable the plants to grow fast and healthy, and hence the outcomes of the use of the fertilizers on the plants are good. The supply of food, as a result, is safeguarded.
Question 12
Some of the strategies that can be taken include the use of certified seeds, early planting so that the crops will have time to grow without the use of fertilizers and fertilizers and carrying out organic farming. For animals, one can ensure that the pesticides used are not so harmful to the environment. In biodiversity, people should ensure that they attract useful insects that aid in pollination by planting nectar and nectar plants.
Question 13
Some of the vulnerabilities concerning the response level in the society include the increase in the threats. The existence of many threats may cause departments involved in responding to disasters to be overwhelmed and, therefore, unable to reach many areas. One of the changes that could be made is that of recruiting more people to work in the departments and also acquiring more resources needed.
Question 14
The scheme for funding and imposing CERCLA needs to be changed. It should be modified in that the funds allocated to the act needs to more since there is a risk of an increase in hazardous waste every day and other accidents that involve the pollution of the environment
Question 15
Some of the measures that can be taken to promote the rehabilitation of brownfield sites include the increase of monitoring by the legal authorities and starting up initiatives to discourage abandonment of sites. The measures will also help in the prevention of the creation of future sites since there will be strict monitoring.
