Ernst Hemingway demonstrates American Modernism.

American modernism was a new literary and artistic thought that arose from the significant changes in culture and society during the age of modernity. Starting from the turn of the 20th Century, which was widely used during World War I and world war II, American modernism touched on contemporary issues such as gender, racism, and the human condition. Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) who came into the modernistic literary limelight while in Paris. Hemingway learned and further nurtured his way of literary style in the 1920s and later became one of the most revered authors of the twentieth Century. Though Hemingway cultivated his writing skills in Paris, he developed a style that favored American Modernism. For instance, Hemingway’s characters often spoke in distinctive American English with the bulk of his stories given an American setting. Besides, he focused many of his writing on fiction, which was well-received within the American citizens. The introduction of modernism in writing presented writers such as Hemingway an avenue to project his ideas and diversify his writing approach, giving birth to modernism.

Hemingway developed a style that resonated with the current happening of the world. The Modernism period occurred during major historical events such as the world war and civil rights movements. America was internally in turmoil, and Hemingway was able to capture all these details in his writings. The characters in his writings were often looking for meaning in a chaotic disordered world. Further, Hemingway bordered his writing on psychology and portrayed his protagonist as Wounded physically, emotionally, or psychologically but exhibit grace under pressure. Most of his writing, based on war, focused more on the devastation of war on men. For instance, in the novel “A Farewell to Arms” by Hemingway, he tells in first person the account of an American expatriate soldier during the Italian buildup to World War I. In “A Clean, Well-Lighted,” still by Hemmingway, it talks of the troubles people endure in life. The older man trying to commit suicide and the tribulations of the waiters specifically told how Americans tried to survive during the economic depression. In essence, earnest Hemmingway’s is undoubtedly the force behind American modernism.
