Ethical
In the current years, there has been an increase in violence cases in most families. In the case study provided, Dave is a ten-year-old boy who undergoes various family problems that a normal kid of his age should not experience. His dad is a drunkard and a raged one for that matter. On the other hand, his mother does not care about what her minor son goes through; she instead comes up with excuses and even covers up for what Dave’s dad does. She even allows Dave’s dad to pick a fight with his younger son, instead of intervening and making it clear to the father that Dave is still young and thus should not pick a fight with him. The main problem in the case study provided is that both Dave’s mom and dad are subjecting a minor not only to physical trauma but also emotional trauma. This problem may cause long term effects to Dave, who might become so violent like his dad in the future. Another problem in the case study is when Dave’s mother keeps covering up for his dad. By doing this, she is justifying Dave’s dad’s actions. The mother makes no attempt to solve the problem and put an end to particularly physical alliteration- instead, she is more concerned with who started the fight. This is not right because Dave is just a minor while the dad is an adult, who knows the right thing to do during such situations. All these problems have led to increased hatred from Dave towards his parents. The mother also encourages the dad’s alcoholism because she never confronts him about it and the problems its causing to the family.
Dave’s parents, especially his dad should realize that he is only but a minor, who is trying to protect himself and his brother, hence, instead of getting back at him, he should find a way of restoring the relationship with his minor son or ask his mother to talk to him. Dave’s mother should address the issues in his family instead of throwing them under the carpet and giving excuses. She should make Dave and his dad understand the importance of respect, peace, and love in the family, instead of worrying about who started the fight. Dave needs to learn how to approach his dad, especially when he is drunk to avoid fights.
Intervention
Various interventions can be undertaken based on the case study provide. For instance, one can get Dave’s mother to understand that children of all ages are vulnerable to the adverse impact of violence; such that memories of this experience are imprinted on the brain, which can affect the neurodevelopment for children. There can be an establishment of a respectful relationship between the dad and his parents. Dave’s mum should let Dave know that, as much as his dad is violent when drunk, he is still lovable, competent, and important. This will help to foster Dave’s self-esteem towards his dad. Alternative conflict resolution skills can also be incorporated. Dave’s dad can also be referred to a rehabilitation center to help end his excessive drinking habits.
Prevention measures
In this case study, various preventive measures can be undertaken to help end the problems experienced in the family. For instance, one can arrange for domestic violence programs especially for Dave’s dad to help him learn the dangers of violence in his family. Teaching Dave, his mother, and father on the importance of respect and having a non-violent environment is can also be undertaken as a preventive measure.
