Ethics and Family Business and Making Excuses Case Study

Business ethics involves a set of ethical guidelines that impact how a company attends its customers and treats its staff. I agree with the authors in these two articles since both support the employees’ morale guidelines and how they should be treated in a business organization. Chris MacDonald tries to explain different types of boycott that have been used by customers to pressure corporations on a range of advancement. He gives an example of how the Ku Klux Klan enticed people not to buy products from the black-owned shops; therefore, driving the stores out of business. This approach aimed eventually at driving out whole marginal populations out of specific states and towns. He stated that it is important to differentiate boycotts from violence. For instance, it is important to note that financial harms are real harms. Economic losses can signify the incapability to eat or even provide for your family. The owner and workers of Catholic-owned corporate in a small city in Indiana in the 1920s might have agonized very actual hardships if the Klan persuaded a sufficient percentage population not to purchase products there, as they occasionally did.

In supporting moral guidelines on how the customers and staff should be treated by a corporate, Alexei Marcoux disagrees with the NBA’s to finish its season at Disney World in Florida, which is recently one of the areas highly affected by Covid 19.  He argues about the risks implied in the players’ families. The players may be young and healthier, but now the once at risk will be their parents since covid-19 is known to affect the older people, especially those suffering from other diseases such as diabetes. He states that the NBA players may be rich, but what about the poor people who cannot afford proper medication when Covid-19 hit them. In his argument, he finds it irrelevant for the NBA management to consider finishing the season despite the challenges ahead.

Ethical theories that are being used

The ethical theory that is being used is egoism, which believes that the uppermost good is to be self-centered regardless of others.  According to the article written by Alexei, this comes closest to my opinion. He explains how the NBA players are willing to risk their health by finishing the season in a highly affected area by Covid-19. They are seemed to be selfish since they do not care about other people who might not be rich like them. Therefore, they can afford their treatment through proper quarantine, seeming not to be considerate of others around them. They concentrate more on finishing the season, forgetting about their parents who are at high risk of contracting the virus and mostly like die due to the poor immune because of their old age. All this brings us to egoism theory that’s being self-centered regardless of others.

According to Charles Macdonald’s article, egoism is also detected there as Ku Klux Klan enticed people not to buy products from the black-owned shops; therefore, driving the stores out of business. This approach aimed eventually at driving out whole marginal populations out of specific states and towns. The businesses organizing the boycotts are self-serving since they punish a particular group of people for their satisfaction. Some boycotts organized by businesses can cause extreme hardships to those involved.

The basis for Making Ethical or Moral Decisions

Ethical decision-making involves the process of assessing and selecting among alternatives in a way consistent with moral principles. In making moral decisions, it is important to perceive and eradicate unethical decisions and choose the best moral alternatives. The process of making moral decisions requires commitment: The need to do the correct thing irrespective of the cost, consciousness: The mindfulness to act reliably and apply ethical convictions to everyday behavior, competency: The ability to gather and evaluate data, develop options and foresee possible risks and consequences.

Good decisions are both effective and moral.

Moral decisions sustain and generate trust; establish responsibility, respect, caring, and fairness; and are reliable with good nationality. These behaviors offer a basis for making improved decisions by setting the ground guidelines for our conduct.

Effective decisions are actual if they achieve what we want to be achieved and improve our determinations. A choice that yields unintended and unwanted results is unproductive. The key to creating operative decisions is to reason about selections in terms of their ability to achieve our most meaningful goals. This means we have to comprehend the variance between short-term goals, immediate and long-term goals.

Foundations of my Positions

Moral values are important in any business or organization since the customers and employees are treated based on how they are stated. Therefore the NBA Management should adopt altruism theory that places everyone ahead of them, considering others in everything they do. Also, boycotts should not be violent; they should improve both the employees’ and customers’ economies and rights.

Conclusion

Ethical values are important in every business; workers and employees get to be treated well. In making moral decisions, it is important to perceive and eradicate unethical decisions and choose the best moral alternatives. With ethical decisions, businesses will be able to accomplish their goals.
