Ethics Case Study: Discussion #3
The process of promoting employees is not a walk in the park. In most cases, the process is tedious, and various factors are put into consideration. In the case study above, the decision is not easy. However, only one candidate will get promoted. I would go for the younger candidate for various reasons. First, the company is not doing well. Thus it would not be wise to pay huge salaries. Unlike the older candidate, the younger candidate is likely to demand less in terms of wages. By promoting the more inexperienced individual, the company will save resources. Unfortunately, the older candidate has a family thus would ask for more money as compensation.
Additionally, the younger candidate has a degree in Engineering, a valuable asset for the company. As a qualified engineer, the company will complete various tasks related to the profession for the company. Although he is not as experienced as the other employee, he has skills. Moreover, the young candidate is still young; thus, he will gain experience with time. I will choose the younger candidate over the older experienced candidate since he is likely to serve the company for many years. By promoting the youthful candidate, the company will keep him away from rivals who want to poach him. I believe hiring a young candidate as a department manager is the best decision. He is skillful and shows great potential. In the next few years, he will be a great leader, and the company will be glad to have him aboard. Also, he is a cheaper alternative than the older employee making the company afford to pay him.
