The purpose behind Howard Winant’s writing this article is to emphasize and appreciate Du Bois’s contribution to sociology. Howard (2017), argues that it is logical to accentuate Du Bois’s contributions in sociology, which is there from the commencement of his work, and subsequent advances increase its significance throughout his career. In this statement, he talks about the need to recognize Du Bois’s work as he has played a major role in the founding of modern sociology.

Howard feels that Du Bois’s contribution to sociology has not been appreciated well enough. He contends that in Du Bois’s publish “The conservation of Races” (1897) and Black Reconstruction in America (1935), Morris only talks about the world-historical scope denying his apposite seat at the founder’s board (Winant, 2017). Nonetheless, in the article, Howard appreciates as he sheds more light on the role of Du Bois as a Pan-Africanist sociologist, and comparative-historical. He focuses on how his publications have helped shape socialization not in the United States only, but the world as a whole as he talks about the slave trade and the limited success of the movements.

The key conclusion that Howard presents in this article is that despite Morris’s accomplishment in his manuscript “The Scholar denied”, Du Bois played a greater part in shaping sociology we have today as much of the ideas we use today in the aim of coming up with a more just and free society are his creations even though he is not given credit for this.

Du Bois was a Pan-Africanist sociologist and a comparative historian. Du Bois in his script “The Suppression of the African Slave Trade to the United States of America”, which was the publish he lays a discussion about captivity during the colonial period that he links to the Black Atlantic, and the European empires, by battling against the European territories from the first Pan African Congress in Manchester to the fifth Congress he became the most determined rights and freedom advocate in the entire world. Moreover, he condemned the discrimination of the white working class. Later on, in his book “Black Reconstruction” (1935), he insists on solidarity across Africa and even goes further to talk about the psychological wage that African workers are being paid.
Winant argues that perhaps no sociologist has effectively fought for liberation as Du Bois. He has provided the foundation, light, and deep knowledge to transform Africans into an anticolonial movement. Were it not for his intellectual commitment and political knowledge he world-systems theory would not have taken a turn for the better or maybe they would not have surfaced at all.
Do Bois grew up concerned about global sociology and race. In his book “anti-slavery movements and their failures“, Do Bois provides new insight into new political slavery, which was characterized by colonial, and post-colonial white powers resisting obliteration with the emergence of the cotton kingdom in1820s to1850s. Based on his publications indeed Du Bois shaped modern sociology greatly.
