Evidence based practice
Evidence based practice is a practice based on patients that was founded by independent scientific research and clinical expertise under patient experiences. Professional nurses can use this approach to determine the cause of care and treatment. For effective performance of work as a nurse, use of evidence based practice remains to be the best undertaken activity. This is because of the following reason.
Use of evidence based practice equips a nurse with scientific research information which enables the nurse to make well founded and effective decisions on the patient s care and treatment. Secondly, through EBP the nurses can remain updated about new medical protocols to patients care. Nurses can as well apply EBP in understanding the risks of ineffective care given to patient and this can make the nurse to perform the best treatment on a patient. For the nurses to effectively apply EBP in their profession, they should have the following qualities; ability to identify gaps in the scientific research done, be able to come up with relevant questions regarding the research one and lastly apply the rules of evidence to determine how valid the research carried is. Use of EBP has led to improved and greater interest on nursing research.
Nurses play a vital role on health care of patients once the patients bring their diagnoses unto their attention. Through incorporation of EBP nurses can help in infection control; making the healthcare environment clean, wearing protective clothing and practicing proper hand washing. Taking blood pressure measurements, through the application of EBP accurate measurements can be gauged. Finally, the mentioned practice is effective when using oxygen to COPD patients as the EBP protocols help in prevention of hypoxia and organ failure.
As a nurse who has knowledge about EBP, I can take care of a wound perfectly without bringing any danger to a patient. If it is a wound that resulted from a cut, I first stop bleeding by applying some pressure using a clean cloth. Use clean water to frequently clean the wound, apply some antibiotics, close and dress the wound to avoid further infections. Later I will routinely change the dressing, disinfect and dry the wound before reapplying a new antibiotic.
