The nursing profession happens to entail various groups of individuals who exercise nursing utilizing specialized, including a unique body of knowledge. The Introduction to Medical-Surgical Nursing course has offered an appropriate foundation on the application of the nursing procedure to care for adult patients conveying medical-surgical conditions across the health-sickness continuum. Accordingly, this is one of the first courses in which nursing students experience whereby it needs them to apply everything they have learned pathophysiology, health evaluation, including pharmacology. By undertaking this course, I have developed rhetorical knowledge, established critical reasoning, reading, including information literacy, as well as established effective intervention strategies on medical surgical nursing.

The scope of the class is to encourage health and prevent sickness or injury among patients from the age of 18 to older than 100 years. The main emphasis of medical surgical nursing care is to achieve biological, spiritual, psychosocial, as well as cultural needs of the above-described class of patients within a mutually caring, trusting and respectful association. These basic requirements, also known as concepts, were initially introduced in the Fundamental of Nursing class. I also learned that nurses who exercise medical-surgical nursing should convey a broad base of knowledge to attain the patients’ needs in the various health care setting along the continuum.

Rapid technological advancements, substantial increases in knowledge, as well as dramatic transformations within the systems of health care delivery need medical-surgical nurses to utilize expert clinical reasoning to make sure safety of the patient is the priority in practice. West Coast University provides a broad spectrum of resources to actively develop the knowledge require mastering the skills and strategies applied in medical surgical nursing. However, these resources were not accessible due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, which has led to the institution being closed. Consequently, I had to creatively utilize the available online resources to develop the appropriate knowledge required within this course.

The class facilitator was generally excellent within his model of teaching, and their approach was effective in ensuring that students grasp what the primary concepts of each content of the course entailed. However, I feel like the course facilitator could have incorporated various teaching strategies to make the class interesting and engaging. As a visual and kinesthetic student, I would have appreciated if the facilitator would have incorporated some educative videos; interactive games use technology as well as make the class interactive. Games happen to be a significant way to keep students engaged. Any form of games will assist in making the class more exciting and keeping students engaged. Using educative videos helps students create a real-world interaction with what is being taught in class. Also using technology is essential as students live on technology daily. Using technology to perform various tasks can help the students be more engaged. Accordingly, the facilitator should attempt the jigsaw cooperative learning approach, in which students work together as a group to accomplish a project. By engaging learners, one enhances the interaction of students in which it makes them interested in the content that they are learning.

During this course, I have established the profound knowledge and strategies of Medical-surgical nursing. However, there is a need for further research concerning this area, mainly within the practical area. A competent nurse undergoes monitoring and evaluation to determine whether they have understood all the procedures adequately. Henceforth, the lack of one-on-one evaluation presented as a significant challenge during this course. As I progress through school, I wish to apply the skills obtained within these skills to effectively perform the duty that my field of interest throws at me.
