Example of True Statesmanship
The coronavirus pandemic has crippled the world. The most affected areas include the social, economic lives of the world population. The epidemic has hit all countries irrespective of their superiority or inferiority. Indeed, countries continue to react differently to the epidemic with several countries show positive trends while others depict slow recovery rates. One of the major factors determining the trend a country takes includes the type of leaders leading the countries during these tough times. Jacinda Arden has proved and ascertains the existence of a true statesman. The prime minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Arden, made the right choice for her people in May 2020. The increased prevalence of the Coronavirus pandemic presented Arden with the dilemma of choosing between saving people’s lives or salvaging its economy. Choosing to lock down the country meant that the leader had to interfere with its developed economic structure. On the other hand, choosing to save the economy meant that the virus would spread fast and result in a population’s adverse health conditions and even death. Arden responded to the virus with an act of true statesmanship by preceding the interests of the people (the economy) and preferring to promote the common good of the community – through implementing a nationwide lockdown that would curb the spread and save more lives.
